Awesome job - Coastguard Wanaka Lakes

A boatie has been found clinging to a floating cushion in near-freezing water by the Wanaka Coastguard.

Yesterday a couple of the crew joined Queenstown Lakes District Council and other local agencies for a multi-agency emergency response exercise. See the video below to find out more.

It was a great chance to test communication, coordination and readiness, and strengthen how we work together when our community needs us - whatever the situation.

Thanks so much to the QLDC team for all the work bringing it together and leading the day, and to everyone involved.

Thanks Hamish for the shout out! Always great to be able to share the good news stories, and glad we could be there to help.

Huge thanks to the legends at the Queenstown Coastguard for giving me a hand tonight. Volunteers giving up their own time to help others when it matters most. Absolute champions — we’re lucky to have you. 👏🚤 Stranded in the lake on a JetSki isn’t much fun. Thanks also to NZ Police
for keeping an eye on me also! Coastguard Queenstown

What would you do if the person driving your boat suddenly couldn’t? Would you know how to call for help, what channel to use, or what to do in an emergency?

Sarah, your friendly local Coastguard volunteer here. Before I joined Coastguard, I wouldn’t have had a clue. Food and sunhats I could do. But flares and radio calls? No chance. I'd have been making it up while feeling very stressed, no doubt.

If that sounds familiar, then this workshop is for you.

Suddenly In Charge is a practical, supportive workshop designed to help women feel more confident on the water - whether you’re usually the passenger, crew, or just keen to build your skills.

There’s no judgment and no expectation of prior knowledge.

This is a hands-on session covering:
⚓ What to do if something goes wrong
⚓ How to use the radio and what channels to use
⚓ Essential boating safety basics
⚓ Simple practical skills that could make a big difference
⚓ Real-world scenarios and confidence-building tips

The session is run by women crew at Coastguard, and we warmly welcome your questions. Chances are, we've asked them ourselves.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to those volunteers and their families who have been affected by this tragedy. As volunteers ourselves we understand the sacrifices you have made to help boaties in trouble. Our thoughts are with you.

Last night was the darkest night ever experienced by Marine Rescue NSW.

Marine Rescue NSW volunteers answer the call for help 24/7 and last night six members from Marine Rescue Ballina did just that. They launched with a single mission, to save lives on the water and assist a yacht, reported to be in difficulty off the South Ballina break wall.

Tragically, two of our volunteers lost their lives during the response.

Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Todd Andrews said the devastating loss is a solemn reminder of the risks faced by volunteers who serve their communities.

“These two men were serving their local community and have made the ultimate sacrifice to help others.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of the deceased, their fellow crew members, the brave radio operators who handled the difficult communications during the incident, the entire Marine Rescue NSW family and the wider Ballina community during this incredibly difficult time.

“We are supporting our volunteers and their families through professional counselling and chaplaincy support.

“We ask that the privacy of those involved and their families be respected during this difficult time,” Commissioner Andrews said.
