Queenstown Lakes District has experienced significant rainfall over the past 24 hours, and our lake and river levels are now high and will remain elevated for the next few days.

Further heavy rain is forecast between midnight and 2.00pm Thursday 23 October, which may cause surface flooding, rising streams, and fast-flowing rivers - especially near alpine catchments.

Please take care around waterways, avoid unnecessary travel in heavy rain, and never drive or walk through floodwaters.

Our Emergency Operations Centre is in monitoring mode and working closely with Otago Civil Defence and Emergency Management and the Otago Regional Council.

🌱Spring tips for Emergency Supplies

💧 Refill your water supply

- Spring is a great time to refill the emergency water supply in your house and car before the dry spells of summer hit (to take the pressure off local water supply).

- Dump the old water on your garden beds or in your pot plants.

- If you’re thinking about upgrading your water storage to tanks check out somewhere like Bunnings or Mitre10 for tank options: https://www.bunnings.co.nz/products/bathroom-plumbing/plumbing/water-tanks/round-water-tanks

🥫Start restocking emergency supplies

- Have a spring clean of your 'Emergency Box' and 'Grab Bag' and take note of items that need using/changing/restocking.

- Use old food items for upcoming camping trips⛺️ and buy new replacement items for box or bag.

- If you’re watching the dollars you could thinking about restocking items slowly (one item a week with your shop if that suits your finances) instead of all at once which can be pricy.

👌🏻Please aim to stock your supplies for at lease two-weeks for each household.

Cheers! Your APCDG.

Geeze that was a good jolt last night! In these small moments it’s always a good reminder to think about how our own household is ready for an emergency:

⚠️ Do you have a household plan? Talk with each about what to do to keep safe.
💦 If our taps aren’t working, do we have a good supply of water?
🍬 Keep a supply of emergency food, or check if items need to be replaced.
🚗 Do we have any emergency supplies in our vehicles? E.g. snacks, water, torch, a spare jacket.

Public consultation on options to strengthen New Zealand’s overarching emergency management legislation has been extended by a week. Submissions are now open until 5pm, 20 May 2025. This extension is in recognition of the busy period many in the sector have had due to recent weather events. We hope this provides additional time to contribute your feedback.

As part of its response to the Government Inquiry into the Response to the North Island Severe Weather Events, the Government intends to pass a new Emergency Management Bill during this term of Parliament. The Bill will replace the Civil Defence Emergency Management Act 2002.

The new Bill is an opportunity to make sure our legislative settings enable the improvements identified through the Government Inquiry and other reviews.

In particular, the legislative reforms aim to ensure there is a whole-of-society approach to emergency management.

We encourage you to read the discussion document on NEMA’s website and share your views on the issues and the options for improving the legislation. Your feedback will help inform further policy development and shape changes to New Zealand’s emergency management legislation.

The discussion document, a summary and information on how to make a submission is available on NEMA’s website www.civildefence.govt.nz/emergency-management-bill. Submissions close 5pm on Tuesday 20 May 2025.
