“On the 21st and 22nd of October, I had the absolute honour and privilege of volunteering at the Central Lakes Polyfest, organised and hosted by Miharo Murihiku Trust.
This incredible two-day, non-competitive cultural performing arts event was held at the Queenstown Events Centre and brought together over 1,000 participants from across Central Otago from early childhood through to secondary students who took the stage to celebrate their culture through song, dance, and performance.
It was a joy to witness the energy and pride radiating from the tamariki and rangatahi, dressed in their traditional attire, performing with such passion, mana, and grace. The room was alive with aroha and whanaungatanga. It was especially heartwarming to see migrant tamariki and rangatahi performing kapa haka, embracing and honouring te ao Māori with such respect and enthusiasm. It was a beautiful reminder of how powerful these spaces are in fostering connection, understanding, and belonging across cultures.
It was also really special to have my 11-year-old son volunteering alongside me, sharing this space with him and watching him experience the richness of our cultures and community spirit was something I’ll always treasure.
A special mihi to Shyla Hona-Jolley, one of our board members, who also volunteered as part of her mahi with ASB, it was wonderful to share this experience together in support of such a meaningful kaupapa.
Ngā mihi nui to everyone involved, especially Miharo Murihiku Trust, for creating a space where culture, connection, and identity are celebrated so powerfully.”
