🚨 NEW LIFEGUARDS ON THE BEACH! 🚨

Huge congrats to Lucy Abraham, Lucy Wattam, Ashton Rutland and Robbie Fisher who are officially our newest Pukehina Surf Rescue lifeguards! 🌊πŸ’ͺ

After smashing through their pool, theory and first aid components, they took on some pretty challenging conditions at Waihi Beach Surf Lifesaving Club and rose to the occasion to achieve their awards. It’s been awesome watching these four come right through our Junior Surf and Rookie Lifeguard pathway and today it all paid off πŸ™Œ

We'd also like to acknowledge Ruby O'Leary who also qualified earlier this year πŸ‘

None of this happens without the incredible support behind the scenes. A massive thank you to Mark and the team for getting our crew exam-ready, be it theory training, first aid or swim training. And to the parents who have supported the process the entire way, we thank you....

The next generation of PSR lifeguards is looking strong β€οΈπŸ’™

🌊 Oceans 2026 – Day 4 🌊

Our final day of competition saw three of our U11 and U12 girls line up for the Diamond Finals, and what a gritty performance from all of them!

πŸ’Ž U12 Diamond Final
β€’ Catalina – 6th

πŸ’Ž U11 Diamond Final
β€’ Harper – 15th
β€’ Bella – 16th

These are fantastic results and a real credit to the hard work the girls have put in over the past few months. To back up day after day and still perform like that shows real determination.

Next up was the Grand Cameron, with hundreds of kids across the age groups, it was a little like herding cats....but a huge credit to the officials, they kept it all running so smoothly πŸ™Œ

Our U14s teamed up with new mates from Red Beach in a composite team and competed hard. Our U12s also gave it everything. One of our teams joined forces with Donny from Whiritoa and worked incredibly well together, while our other U12 team powered through to make the final, finishing 19th β€” an awesome effort to round out the carnival.

As we wrap up four massive days, we want to say a huge thank you to all of our parents and supporters who made this week possible. From early starts and tent set-ups, to transporting gear, cheering on the sidelines, getting our athletes to where they were meant to be and keeping everyone fed β€” it truly took the village to get this done. We had our biggest ever attendance from PSR (18 athletes this year!!) and every single person played a huge role. We are ever so grateful to you all.

Most of all, we’re proud of our kids. The effort, sportsmanship and resilience they’ve shown all week has been outstanding. They’re already talking about next year, and we can’t wait to see what 2027 brings! β€οΈπŸ’™

🌊 Oceans 2026 – Day 3 🌊

Another scorcher of a day and our crew kept showing up! β˜€οΈ

Today our young athletes put their speed and skill to the test across the Run Swim Run, Board Relays and Beach Flags, and there were some outstanding efforts right across the board.

We had several athletes narrowly miss out on semis in the Run Swim Run, but our U11 and U12 girls powered through to the finals πŸ‘

πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ U11 Girls Final
β€’ Bella – 7th
β€’ Harper – 9th
β€’ Evelyn – 15th

πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ U12 Girls Final
β€’ Cat – 15th
β€’ Rose – 18th
β€’ Jade – 19th

In the Board Relays, our younger teams came close to the semis and had a great time on the water. Toren and Ash teamed up with a new mate from Waihi in a composite team, and they made the semi, an awesome effort and great to see friendships forming across clubs.

The afternoon brought Beach Flags, always a favourite! Despite the heat, the kids dug deep and we saw some fantastic results:

🏁 U12 Boys
β€’ Brodie – Top 13
β€’ Ryder – Top 25

🏁 U13 Boys
β€’ Toren – 6th
β€’ Van – Top 15

🏁 U14 Boys
β€’ Ash – Top 16

A huge congratulations to Toren on placing 6th in beach flags in a large U13 field β€” outstanding effort! Many of these age groups have close to 100 competitors. To be making semi's or finals is pretty phenomenal and we are all so proud of you!

We were also treated to a stunning display from the Royal New Zealand Air Force Black Falcons ✈️ The skill and aerobatics were next level and such a cool experience for everyone watching.

Tomorrow is our final day, with Cat, Bella and Harper taking on the Diamond Finals and the squad hitting the Grand Cameron races.

A huge thanks to our resident photographer, Rachel Foster for these awesome shots...πŸ₯°

Let’s go team! πŸ’ͺπŸ’™β€οΈ

🌊 Oceans 2026 – Day 2! 🌊

What a big day for our crew, and it was a hot one too! β˜€οΈ The kids dug deep and gave it everything they had.

We kicked things off with the 2km Beach Run Relay (800m, 600m, 400m, 200m legs). This year we managed to field FOUR teams β€” how good is that?! Out of 92 teams competing:

πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ Pukehina Punishers – 27th
πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ Pukehina Pirates – 49th
πŸƒ Pukehina Power – 80th
πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ Pukehina Pulse – fantastic effort from our youngest crew

Running in soft sand is no easy task, and our athletes pushed through brilliantly.

From there we headed into the Board events:

πŸ„β€β™€οΈ U11s – Bella and Jacob made the semis, with Harper and Evelyn powering through to the final, finishing 12th and 15th.
πŸ„β€β™€οΈ U12s – Cat made the semi finals.
πŸ„β€β™‚οΈ U13 Boys – Toren just missed out on a semi.

Next up were the Diamond events, a tough combo of swim then board, this is a real endurance test!

πŸ’Ž Semi finalists: Jacob, Brodie and Rose
πŸ’Ž A huge congratulations to Bella and Harper (U11) and Cat (U12) for making their Diamond Finals β€” racing on Sunday! πŸ™Œ

Our U13 & U14s then hit the sprint track:
πŸƒ Toren just missed the semi
πŸƒ Van narrowly missed the final
πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ Ash (U14 Boys) reached the semi final

Ash also joined a composite relay team, had a great race and made some new mates from other clubs β€” love to see it!

A massive thank you to Jamie Troughton for capturing some fantastic action shots of our kids, we’re so lucky to have those moments recorded πŸ₯°

And big thanks to Monty’s, one of our awesome local businesses, for feeding our troops with the most amazing pizza, it's very much appreciated after a long day in the sun! πŸ•

We’re so proud of every single athlete. They have represented our club with pride and outstanding sportsmanship πŸ’•

🌊 Day 1 at Oceans 2026 🌊

What an incredible first day at Oceans 2026! We couldn’t be prouder of every single one of our Pukehina kids. Over the past few months they’ve shown up to training in all conditions, pushed themselves, supported each other, and today that hard work truly showed.

For many of our competitors, this is their very first Oceans. Taking on a carnival of this size is no small feat, and they handled it like champions πŸ’™ Every athlete gave it their absolute all. From those who just narrowly missed out on quarter and semi finals (so close!) to those who powered their way through to finals, you’ve all done yourselves and our club proud.

A special shoutout to our finalists today:

πŸŠβ€β™€οΈ U11 Girls Surf Race Final
β€’ Bella Abraham – 11th
β€’ Harper Tod – 12th

πŸŠβ€β™€οΈ U12 Girls Surf Race Final
β€’ Catalina Yanez Contador – 7th
β€’ Rose Foster – 15th
β€’ Jade Easton – 18th

πŸŠβ€β™‚οΈ U12 Boys Surf Final
β€’ Brodie Ripo – 14th

πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ U12 Boys Sprint Final
β€’ Brodie Ripo – 8th

Every athlete contributed to a strong first day for PSR, and we're all looking forward to another action packed day tomorrow.

What an epic Harris Cup Carnival! πŸ†πŸŒŠ

On Saturday we proudly hosted our annual Harris Cup β€” a fantastic day where small clubs come together for friendly competition, connection and plenty of fun.

We’re incredibly proud of all our kids who represented our club β€” ribbons, medals or big smiles, everyone gave it their all, made friends and shared plenty of laughs along the way.

And to top it off… we’ve won the Harris Cup and will proudly display it at the club for another year! What an awesome achievement β€” well done team! πŸ‘

A huge thank you to our amazing volunteers and helpers. Days like this simply don’t happen without you.

Thank you as well to the clubs who came to compete:β€’ Whakatane Surf Life Saving Clubβ€’ Opotiki Surf Life Saving Clubβ€’ Maketu Surf Life Saving Clubβ€’ Waihi Beach Surf Life Saving Clubβ€’ Special mention to Raglan Surf Life Saving Club β€” we hope to see you back next year!

🌊 Why We’re Doing Things a Little Differently This New Year 🌊

You might notice that this New Year, we’re switching things up a bit with our fundraising ✨

Over recent years, we’ve received ongoing feedback from families and community members that the traditional approach no longer works for everyone. Safety concerns, cashless households, and personal concerns have all played a part in this.

So this year, instead of knocking on your door, we’re opening ours and inviting you down to the club πŸ–οΈ

πŸŽ‰ Let’s start the year together!

Come along for your first swim of 2️026, enjoy a BBQ breakfast , check out our new facility️, and support Pukehina Surf Rescue in a way that is positive, welcoming, and inclusive 🀝

This change reflects our commitment to grow and evolve alongside our community, while continuing to fund the vital work our club does ❀️

This year, we are fundraising for:
β€’ Seating and storage for the changing rooms
β€’ Outdoor community showers
β€’ Completion of the Lifeguard Tower fit-out

Thank you for your ongoing support β€” and for embracing something new with us πŸ™
