Friends of Flora

Friends of Flora Friends of Flora is a group of volunteers dedicated to restoring a healthy eco-system to the Mt Arthur Tablelands/Flora/Deep Creek area of Kahurangi NP.

Friends of Flora volunteers have undertaken predator control work for 21 years, with our trap lines now covering approximately 10,000 hectares in Kahurangi National Park. Currently we monitor over 1,285 stoat traps. In 2007 we re-introduced whio into the Flora Stream. We now have a sustainable breeding population of these ancient birds. From 2010-2015 we re-introduced 44 roroa (great spotted kiwi

) within the predator control area. The first chick was born in 2012, and the population continues to grow.

The story of whio in the Flora featured at the recent Ornithological conference run by Birds NZ. The poster summarises 36 years of data collected by DOC and more recently FOF. The emerging threat from feral cats and ferrets prompted much discussion.

A cake that tells the story of 25 years of conservation work! Elise baked the celebration cake and decorated it with edible figures representing FOF's projects over quarter of a century. And it was as delicious as it was beautiful. Thank you Elise! and thanks to all FOF's volunteers who have done the hard yards in the Flora for so long.

Friends of Flora is lucky to have many incredible volunteers. Congratulations to Greg Pickford, on receiving an Outstanding Community Service award. His achievements are breathtaking.
In the air, on the ground, and underground, Greg Pickford has been a driving force behind countless community and conservation projects across Tasman District for more than 50 years.
He has been a member of the Nelson Speleological Group since 1975, holding numerous leadership roles and been involved in LandSAR (search and rescue), serving as cave rescue advisor for 40 years.
When not underground, Greg is soaring in the air as a gliding enthusiast and leader in the Nelson Lakes Gliding Club, having helped design and build their special glider winch launching system.
Back on the ground, he is an active member of the Keep Richmond Beautiful group, Native Bird Recovery Richmond and Friends of Snowden’s Bush groups, as well as Friends of Flora.
Thanks Greg for all your mahi.

It was a big weekend up the hill: 19 days work by 13 volunteers; 150 tracking tunnels set and cards retrieved; 2 trap lines and 3 camera traps serviced. Rodents are still tracking high, but the autumn fungi provided unexpected distractions. Thanks to all involved.

Fernbirds are more often heard than seen. But they're also curious and if you wait patiently they may creep out of a dense bush to check you out. It's been a bumper season for them on the fringes of the alpine zone - a treat for FOF's hardworking volunteers. Thanks Paul for sharing this wonderful video.
