Nau mai, kuhu mai ki te marae e Kapohau!

We’re excited to welcome Kapohau Matiu Wharepapa (Te Whānau a Apanui, Te Rarawa) to the Te Āwhina Marae whenua tīma.
Kapohau joins us as a Kaitiaki Whenua, supporting our mahi including gardens & lawns, repairs and maintenance, manaaki support with manuhiri, emergency management planning, and whakairo in our carving studio, Te Aratoki. You’ll likely see him around the marae, lending a hand and contributing to the kaupapa when you visit.
We’re stoked to have Kapohau on board, strengthening our mahi on the whenua and supporting the ongoing care and wellbeing of our marae. When you’re next at Te Āwhina, be sure to give him a wave 👋🏽

Kia ora everyone,

We encourage all whānau, kaimahi and committee members to download the Antenno mobile app and set up your key locations. This is one of the easiest ways to stay informed, especially during weather events or unexpected situations such as water outages or recycling and rubbish changes.

What is Antenno?

Antenno is a free and easy-to-use app that sends notifications straight to your phone about things happening in the areas you care about. You can choose specific locations, so you only receive alerts that are relevant to you.

Why this matters for us
When something happens, a common question is: where can I find the latest information? Whether it’s a weather event, water break, road closure or other unplanned issue, Antenno is one of the most reliable ways to receive real-time updates.

For our papakāinga whānau, kaimahi and committee, it helps us stay connected to what’s happening across:

Te Āwhina Marae
Your home, including the Papakāinga – Te Ara o Tūrangaapeke is on the AP!
Workplaces
Tamariki kura or childcare locations

You can save multiple locations in the app. For best results, enter a specific address (e.g. 133 Pah Street, Motueka) rather than just the suburb.

What kind of updates will you receive?
Antenno may notify you about:
Road closures
Water shutdowns or issues
Recycling and rubbish changes
Weather warnings
Public transport updates (eBus)

This is particularly useful in emergency situations, where timely information helps keep our whānau safe and informed.

Two-way communication
You can also use Antenno to report issues you see in the community. Simply:
Take a photo
Add a short description
Send it through the app

The location is automatically included, making it easier for councils to respond quickly.

Wider coverage across Te Tauihu
Both Nelson City Council and Marlborough District Council use Antenno, so it helps keep you informed across the wider region.

Easy to use
No login or personal information required
Simple to set up
Free to download

How to download
iPhone users: search “Antenno” in the App Store
Android users: search “Antenno” in Google Play

Next step: please download the app and set up your key locations (marae, home, work, kura). It’s a simple step that strengthens how we stay connected and respond as a hapori.

Ngā mihi nui,
Jacinda, Juanita and Miriana
Te Āwhina Marae

Kia ora e te whānau

Ahead of this year's General Election on 7 November, there are significant law changes that will impact whānau when it comes to enrolling and voting.
Māori Electoral Roll: This year, Māori voters will not be able to change their choice of roll (Māori roll or general roll) within three months of the election date. If whānau want to change rolls, they will need to do it by midnight on Thursday 6 August.

No enrolments on voting day or the fortnight beforehand: Whānau will no longer be able to enrol on voting day or in the two weeks prior. If whānau want to vote, they will need to be enrolled by midnight on Sunday 25 October.

If whānau are unaware of these changes, they may miss out on the opportunity to have their say at the General Election. For this reason, the Office of Te Āwhina Marae will be working with the Electoral Commission to share important information about the above changes with our community and whānau in the coming months.

Funding Opportunity
As a new initiative, the Electoral Commission has launched a Community Education Fund for the 2026 General Election. The purpose of this fund is to provide small grants (up to $25,000) to community-led groups for projects focused on increasing enrolment uptake in their communities.

The Fund is split into two parts: Māori Electoral Option and General Election.

Applications for Māori Electoral Option projects open on 7 April and close on 11 May.

Applications for General Election projects open on 25 May and close on 19 June.

If you or whānau are interested in applying, the Commission is holding an in-person hui in Richmond on Thursday 9 April. Details of the hui are as follows:

Time options: 11am-12pm

Venue: Greenmeadows Putangitangi, Greenmeadows Park, 252 Songer St, Nelson

RSVP to [email protected]

There will also be a series of online hui via Teams for those outside of Motueka as follows:

Tuesday 7 April: 11 am-12pm
Tuesday 7 April: 3 pm-4pm
Friday 10: April: 3 pm-4pm

No RSVP is required for the online hui.

For more information about the Community Education Fund and the 2026 General Election, visit the Commission’s website elections.nz.

6 of us from Te Āwhina marae and Wakatū spent the weekend at Shepherdess Muster in Tokanui connecting, learning and sharing experiences.
A powerful reminder that investing in wāhine leadership and creating space for learning together strengthens our communities and mahi.
A special way to mark International Women’s Day.

26/01/2026

Today the whānau and hāpori of Te Āwhina Marae gathered to welcome Lex Davis (Te Rarawa) as the new Principal of Motueka High School. It was a privilege to extend our manaakitanga and mark this important moment for our wider community. In pōwhiri, we shared our aspirations for our rangatahi and the wider Motueka High School kaimahi who will be supported under Lex’s leadership. Waiata, hongi, and kai were also shared as we welcomed him into our hāpori and affirmed our commitment to walking alongside the school and its tauira.

We also acknowledge and thank John Prestidge, the outgoing Principal, for his leadership and service to Motueka High School and our community, and for the legacy he leaves behind.

Education is a taonga for our tamariki. We look forward to tautoko Lex and the Motueka High School kaimahi as they nurture rangatahi to grow strong and confident in both te ao Māori and te ao whānui.
