Maungarongo Marae history, taken from our Trust Deed::
“The Whatitiri Māori Reserves Trust is legally responsible for administering the “Whatitiri Māori Reserves” under the Te Ture Whenua Māori” being “... set apart ‘as Maori reservations for the purposes set out opposite each block respectively, such reservations to be for the common use and benefit of the Te Uriroroi, Te Parawhau and Mahurihuri
subtribes of Ngapuhi’”. The deed describes the geography and locations as ”... five wahitapu, Oraerae, Waiora, Waihaupapa, Mangakura and Whatarenga, one Marae reserve, Maungarongo, and one water reserve, Waipao, and are legally known as Whatitiri 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 13Z3 and 13Z4, respectively. The five wahitapu are all burial grounds. Oraerae and Waiora are both located near to Whatitiri Rd, Whatitiri, and consist of four and ten acres, respectively. Whatarenga, of one acre, is near to Kerehunga Rd, Whatitiri. Mangakura, of two acres, is near to Mangakura Rd, Poroti, and Waihaupapa, of 17 acres, is near to Blagrove Rd, Poroti. Maungarongo Marae was originally scheduled as a “Peoples hall” and is located in Poroti, approximately 21 kilometres west of Whangarei, on Mangakahia Road. The Marae site of one acre is situated adjacent to Poroti School and the Mangakahia Sports Complex. The water reserve, Waipao, is two acres in size and located diagonally opposite Maungarongo Marae, on Mangakahia Rd.”
The 2011 trust strategic plan stated our purpose was “To progress, develop and maintain the well-being of hapu ki Whatitiri, namely Te Uriroroi, Te Parawhau and Te Māhurihuri.”
