Titahi Bay Horticultural Society

Titahi Bay Horticultural Society Titahi Bay Horticultural Society is a friendly group sharing a love of gardening and horticulture. We conclude with supper and chat. Anyone may exhibit.

Description:

Our society is a friendly, informal group of like minded people with a love of gardening. We enjoy listening to guest speakers, trying out new gardening ideas, attending workshops, going on garden visits, sharing plants, bulbs, seeds, ideas and, of course, talking about gardening! Meetings:

We meet at 7.30pm on the third Tuesday of each month (February to November) at Titah

i Bay Community Church in Mana Avenue, Titahi Bay. At each meeting we have a bring and buy plant sales table, raffles, an invited speaker or demonstration, and an informal competition with flowers, shrubs, fruit and vegetables and planted containers from our own gardens. Sometimes we visit gardens together as a group and have a coffee. Highlight of the Year:

On the last weekend of August we hold our Spring Flower Show. The show is open to the public on Saturday from 1 till 5pm and on Sunday from 10am till 3.30pm, followed by the prize giving. Amateurs are welcome. We have classes for children, amateurs, and experienced exhibitors. Bring along your flowers and we will help you to exhibit them. Membership:
Membership is open to all interested gardeners in Porirua and beyond. Subscriptions are only $20 for the year. Come along at no obligation and check out our friendly group.

For healthier irises, wait until the leaves yellow before doing a full cutback ✂️

Sound advice.

Iris leaves can look messy after blooming, but timing matters 🌿 Let them feed the plant first before cutting them back.

I used to think flower cuttings were harder than this, but some of them really do root beautifully in just water 🌸 A few little things that help:
🌿 Use a clean jar so the stem doesn’t rot
✂️ Cut just below a leaf node, that’s where roots usually form best
💧 Change the water every few days so it stays fresh
☀️ Keep the jar in bright light, but not harsh direct sun
🌱 Wait until the roots are a few inches long before moving them into soil
My favorite part is being able to watch the roots grow. It makes propagation feel a lot less intimidating, especially if you’re just starting out.
