New Zealand's Māori culture is second only to our landscapes as the main reason visitors come here. If tourism experiences are able to incorporate both of these aspects in an authentic way, it can make for a winning combination
Although the traditional aspects such as hangi and haka remain important parts of Māori life - and tourism - today there is a much wider range of tourism products that incorporate Māori culture. Experiences such as guided walks, white water rafting, art and cultural tours, fly-fishing, and the opportunity to hear the unique, in-depth stories of New Zealand's places, people and activities first-hand are proving to be popular among international visitors. Interpretation and storytelling are combining the best of New Zealand's spectacular landscape with Māori stories and legends - and international visitors love it. The number, variety and quality of Māori tourism businesses have increased dramatically over the last few years and the sector now makes an important contribution to New Zealand's regional economies. New Zealand Māori Tourism (NZMT) is an incorporated society, the full members of which are either Māori regional tourism organisations or Māori tourism businesses. The kaupapa/purpose of NZMT is to position Māori as leaders of the Aotearoa New Zealand tourism experience. In doing so, NZMT seeks to provide members with opportunities to grow their business; increase earnings; create employment; protect, develop, and present Māori culture; and enter value-generating partnerships with all segments of the tourism, trade, and investment sectors.

Last Monday, our Tumu Whakawātea kaikarakia came together to acknowledge the recent passing of pou within te iwi Māori. Our tōhunga led us in a series of karakia and a poroporoaki to honour the lives of these rangatira and the legacy they have left behind.

Once again, we'd like to say congratualtions to the finalists and winners at this year's NZ Tourism Awards and NZEA Awards. We are immensley proud to serve such a talented and accomplished group of individuals and organisations, and look forward to continuing to support and celebrate your achievements in the future.

We had two operators from our whānau crowned winners on Tuesday (7 Nov) at the NZ Tourism Awards. Kohutapu Lodge - Lake Aniwhenua, Bay of Plenty won the Tourism New Zealand Industry Collaboration and Alignment Award before Te Pā Tū - New Zealand received the Westpac Resilience and Innovation Award and the Toroa a-uta, Toroa ā-tai Māori Tourism Award.

Ka mau te wehi, kōrua, and we hope you both find time this weekend to rejoice in your success. To our whānau who converged on the capital to tautoko our finalists on the night, your presence added to the occasion and celebration.
