The Legislation (Definitions of Woman and Man) Amendment Bill passed its first reading in Parliament today. We oppose this Bill.
Gender identity is deeply personal. It refers to each person's internal sense of who they are, which may or may not correspond with the s*x assigned at birth. For some people, gender sits outside the binary. For others, it is fluid, or it is something they do not experience at all.
Most people are placed into binary s*x and gender categories from birth, regardless of whether those categories reflect who they actually are.
This Bill would further entrench that binary into law, forcing people to conform to categories that do not account for the full reality of human experience. For those who do not see themselves in those categories, the emotional and psychological impact is real and significant.
We urge all political parties in Parliament to vote this Bill down at select committee. It will only deepen stigma, division, and harm.
To our , , and whānau: you are who you say you are. No piece of legislation changes that.
