The Marlborough Sounds blue cod season opens this Friday, 20 December 🐟

The daily limit is 2 per person, with a minimum size of 33cm.

It’s important to remember that blue cod must be landed whole or gutted, unless the fish is eaten immediately aboard a boat. You cannot fillet blue cod and then claim it was the legal size.

Fishery officers will be out throughout the Marlborough region, inspecting catch bags and bins.

If you’re in the area and perhaps staying at a bach, the most you can have in your possession is 2 daily limits. If you intend to take any of that fish home, the same landed whole or gutted rule applies.

The facility is owned and managed by Picton Marina and is available to both commercial and recreational vessel owners. Operating as a “Pick up, drop off” facility only, there is a maximum stay of 30 minutes. Vessels are not to be left unattended.

For longer berthage requirements there is the Picton visitors wharf at the Picton Foreshore (Maximum length of 10m) subject to availability. Please contact the Picton Marina Service Centre on 03 520 2290.

Our Rescue Coordination Centre (RCCNZ) is reminding outdoors enthusiasts to use established rescue response devices, particularly distress beacons and VHF radios, if they need help in an emergency.

The reminder follows the recent launch of One NZ’s nationwide Satellite TXT service, which is currently available on a limited number of devices.

“While emerging technologies like the Satellite TXT service have potential for enabling communication from remote locations, distress beacons remain the most reliable and effective way to initiate a rescue,” says Justin Allan, General Manager RCCNZ and Safety Systems.

“Distress beacons have access to multiple satellite constellations ensuring there is always coverage across New Zealand, which means an alert will quickly make its way to RCCNZ.”

“Services such as Satellite TXT, can be used to complement your beacon and add value alongside existing emergency communication networks.”
