National Whale Centre - Te Tari Tohorā o Waitohi

National Whale Centre - Te Tari Tohorā o Waitohi The NWC is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit education, exhibition and research centre located in Picton, Marlborough, New Zealand.

We are about whales

We tell the stories

• Whale species and their physiognomy

• The history of sealing and whaling in Aotearoa/New Zealand

• Whales and Māori and Pacific traditions

• The Picton, Marlborough Sounds and Kaikoura stories

• The world history of whaling and arrival of European whalers in Aotearoa

• The shift from hunting to conservation and marine biodiversity

Where we are

We are a national institution based in Picton/Waitohi

• The area was the epicentre of New Zealand’s whaling industry for 180+ years

• The Marlborough Sounds and Cook Strait now provide a unique and protected marine environment

We provide links

• The National Whale Centre is a display and information hub

• We link up locally, nationally and globally with kindred organisations

Because cetaceans are for everyone

We are dynamic

• Static displays are not our priority

• We will tell and curate relevant new stories through temporary exhibitions and events

• We wont be scared to change our tune

• We stand on the shoulders of the past to provide a view of the future

• We are for the next generation – our future guardians
