Outward Bound is a non-profit organisation specialising in personal and professional development - our aim is to help create better people, better communities, and a better world. People of all ages, cultures, abilities, and backgrounds are welcome at Outward Bound. Located in Anakiwa in the Marlborough Sounds, we help you reach your full potential through challenge in the outdoors. Our classrooms are the mountains, bush and waterways of this beautiful corner of New Zealand.

If you've met Marcel, chances are you've never forgotten him.

For years, he's been helping feed generations of Outward Bound students in the Anakiwa dining hall, a place where students come together after a day of challenge, share stories over a hot meal, and build friendships that can last a lifetime.

And behind every meal is a kitchen working hard to fuel hundreds of students every year.

But our fridge and freezer storage has reached capacity. We're already storing food offsite, and as we welcome more students to Anakiwa each year, we need your help.

We're raising $160,000 to upgrade our food storage facilities and ensure Anakiwa is ready for the next generation of students.

Periods are a normal part of everyday life. They are a normal part of life at Outward Bound, too.

Whether you are on a multi-day tramp, sailing the cutters, or kayaking the rivers, you will have everything you need to manage your period at Outward Bound. We will always provide a safe and private space for you to manage your ikura (period) while on course.

We know this is a common concern. Because of that, we have put together a full resource to answer all your questions. We cover everything from cultural needs to the practical "how-to" while in nature.

Kia ora Course 736!

April was an epic month. You showed up every day, gave it your best, and made the most of every moment. We’re so proud of all you’ve achieved and can’t wait to see what’s ahead for you.

Being tucked away at the start of the Queen Charlotte Track means we share our backyard with some pretty world-class native bush. Unfortunately, we also share it with a lot of hungry stoats, rats, and possums.

Checking traps is a common occurrence here at Outward Bound. It’s not exactly glamorous. It usually involves muddy boots, funny smells, and a fair bit of bush bashing. But regular trapping is essential if we want to keep the canopy full of birdsong.

Last week at dawn, our staff across the country paused in remembrance.

ANZAC Day reflects courage, service, and connection, reminding us of the responsibility we share to show up for others.

Lest we forget.

The headlines about global warming can feel heavy. Every year, the stats get tougher, and it’s no surprise that our rangatahi (young people) are feeling the weight of a pessimistic future. It’s easy to feel small when faced with a challenge this big.

But we believe that connection is the antidote to nihilism. While the world waits for corporations and governments to enact meaningful change, we are focusing on the power of the people. Our Manawa Ora course (which translates to "Hope") is designed to bridge the gap between feeling overwhelmed and feeling empowered.

Being in nature is often the first step toward protecting it. By strengthening their bond with te taiao (the natural world), our students learn that they don't have to wait for others to make change; they can start right in their own backyards.

Check out our Manawa Ora 2026 cohort in action! They’ve been out at the local awa, monitoring for macro-invertebrates and testing water quality.

This course is about giving our rangatahi a voice. These students are returning to their communities ready to advocate for the world they want to see, backed by the confidence they've gained right here in Anakiwa.

Every Outward Bound journey starts with that first step onto the iconic jetty.

It’s been there for every course - worn down by the half-marathon at the end of a 21-day course, stomped on by students hauling their gear, eager and nervous before setting sail.

And of course, it’s been the launchpad for countless jumps and backflips, marking the end of days packed with fun, challenge, and adventure.

Do you have fond memories of the OB jetty?
