⭐Save The Kiwi Month⭐
Did you know that most New Zealanders have never seen a kiwi in the wild before? In fact, most New Zealanders are lucky if they have even seen one behind glass!
❗Our current kiwi population in New Zealand sits around 68,000 but is declining by roughly 2% every year. Sadly, that's a decline of approximately 20 kiwis a week, according to Save the Kiwi trust.
So how can you help?
🌿A huge part of helping our kiwis is predator control! Helping to lower our number of pests like stoats and rats who eat kiwi eggs and are a threat to chicks will help to protect our numbers (and all sorts of other natives too!).
💡Have you ever thought about doing pest control in your own backyard? Or maybe volunteering with a group or organization near you to lend a helping hand?
If you head over to you can find out more information on how you might be able to help in your local area! 🤝
🌿Report a sick, injured or dead kiwi. If you happen to find a kiwi in the wild that is need of help you can ring . The Department of Conservation have a 24-hour emergency hotline: 0800 DOC HOT (0800 362 468) that you can call if you find a kiwi in need of help. It is important to know that even if the kiwi has sadly passed away, they would like to hear about it. Understanding what might be hurting our birds will help us better understand how we can help them.
😍We were incredibly lucky once to see some Rowi kiwis in the wild! We just happened to be checking nesting boxes for little blue penguin nests and came across not one, nor two or even three, but FOUR beautiful little kiwis taking a sleep in the penguin boxes.
