Another huge month in the books 💚

From swimming our way through a sea of kiwifruit and delivering doughnuts to some of our incredible Food Hub volunteers, to releasing our Annual Report and taking home Silver at this year’s New Zealand Insights Effectiveness Awards, September has been another jam-packed month.

But alongside all of that, the essential mahi has continued right across our network, getting good food to communities and making a real impact along the way.

Together, in September we accomplished:
📦 778K kg of food redistributed
🍽️ 1.5M meal equivalents
🌱 1.70M kg of CO₂-eq emissions prevented

🥝 What a goldmine! 💚

After we put the call out to our donor community for surplus food, our friends at Zespri International connected us with several kiwifruit industry packhouses that had surplus SunGold™ Kiwifruit looking for a home.

Together, they generously donated this incredible produce, allowing our team to ensure it reached communities rather than going to waste.

These little gems arrived at our Auckland Distribution Centre last month, where our warehouse team and volunteers got to work carefully repacking and preparing them for distribution throughout our Food Hub network.

Packed with vitamin C, this donation couldn't have come at a better time. As we move into spring, these nutritious kiwifruit will help Food Hubs provide fresh produce to the communities they support.

A huge thank you to the packhouses for their generosity, and to the team at Zespri for helping make this donation possible. Ngā mihi nui for helping get good food to where it's needed most. 💚

A silver win for the Hunger Monitor! 🥈💚

We’re incredibly proud to have received Silver at the 2026 New Zealand Insights Effectiveness Awards, alongside Ipsos New Zealand, for our first Hunger Monitor.

Recognised in the Insight Communication Effectiveness award category, this is fantastic recognition for the work that went into taking the findings of our first Hunger Monitor and turning them into a clear and compelling picture of food insecurity across Aotearoa New Zealand.

The Hunger Monitor was created to help build a stronger evidence base around food insecurity, bringing greater visibility to the experiences behind the numbers and supporting more informed conversations about the pressures people are facing and why long-term solutions matter.

A huge thank you to our research partners at Ipsos New Zealand for their expertise and insight, and to everyone who shared their experiences to inform the research.

We’re proud to see the Hunger Monitor recognised by Research Association NZ (RANZ) and Aotearoa’s wider research and insights community.

Most importantly, we hope this recognition helps keep the conversation about food security moving forward. 💚

That's why feedback like this means so much. Donations of quality protein can help Food Hubs provide meal options that many families might otherwise have to go without.

What a paws-itively incredible result! 🐾💚

For the second year running, the Petstock Foundation's Big Hearts Campaign has helped support pets and people across Aotearoa.

Thanks to the generosity of Petstock customers and team members across the country, raised a tail-wagging $25,000 throughout August..

Those funds will help us provide quality pet food through our Food Hub network, ensuring furry whānau members receive support too.

Thank you to everyone who got behind the campaign, donated, shared, and helped spread the word.

Food rescue happens because people show up.

Every day, kaitūao (volunteers) give their time and energy to sort, pack, and prepare kai, helping ensure good food reaches hapori and whānau across Aotearoa.

Their manaakitanga is an essential part of food rescue. Through their generosity and willingness to lend a hand, they help strengthen communities and make our work possible.

This Te Wiki o te Reo Māori we want to celebrate and acknowledge the many volunteers who support food rescue across the motu.

Ngā mihi nui. The impact we create together would not be possible without you.

Every rescued meal starts with a single act of manaakitanga.

This sets the journey of kai in motion. From there, food is collected, sorted, and prepared at our Distribution Centres in Tāmaki Makaurau and Ōtautahi before making its way through our Food Hub network and into local hapori across Aotearoa.

Behind every donation is a network of people working together. Donors, volunteers, logistics partners, Food Hubs, and community organisations all play a part in ensuring good kai reaches those who need it most.

Holy mackerel! We mean trevally! 🐟💚

The phenomenal team at Pelco NZ Ltd have come through once again with another generous donation of delicious trevally.

Since connecting with Pelco earlier this year, they have been incredible supporters of NZFN and the communities our Food Hubs serve.

At Feeding Rotorua's People, the fish was smoked with honey and brown sugar, served alongside chicken, vegetables, cauliflower rice, and rice, creating nourishing meals for the people attending their community dinners.

The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with whānau sharing how much they enjoyed the fish and many portions disappearing shortly after delivery.

It's always special to hear how donations are being transformed into meals, shared with communities, and enjoyed by the people receiving them.

A huge thank you to Pelco for their continued generosity and support. Ngā mihi nui for helping get good food to where it's needed most. 💚

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori is an opportunity to celebrate language, culture, and the values that bring communities together.

At NZFN, we see these values reflected every day through the mahi of our Food Hubs, volunteers, donors, and partners.

Manaakitanga, whanaungatanga, and kaitiakitanga are values we strive to embody through our mahi, as do the donors, Food Hubs, volunteers, and partners who make up our wider network.

These aren't just words. They are reflected in the way communities come together to support one another and ensure good kai reaches those who need it most.

We're delighted to share that NZFN has been named a finalist in three Spotlight Categories at the 2026 Best Places to Work™ Awards. 💚

Earlier this year, we received Gold-level certification, recognising the culture our team creates every day through care, collaboration, and shared purpose. We're also incredibly grateful to EMA for supporting us through the programme and helping make this opportunity possible.
