Patumahoe Mauku Playcentre

Patumahoe Mauku Playcentre We are a friendly, well resourced centre in the heart of Patumahoe Village. We offer a range of sessions for children from birth to six years (0-6).

Patumahoe Mauku Playcentre is a place where our children are supported to become confident, competent self-directed learners through play based around their interests. Our children gain knowledge through play, participation and positive guidance. Our Children’s curiosity and creativity is nurtured through the fun range of experiences provided … no two days at Playcentre are the same. Our children

develop nurturing and social skills which have lifelong benefits. Siblings attend together, allowing older children to mentor younger children and practise empathy and caring. Our parental relationships developed through Playcentre provide support from parents and help them develop new parenting and life skills. Our parents are actively involved in providing our children’s learning programmes. The high adult to child ratio allows a good balance for group and individual support during each session. There is no other organisation for early childhood education and family development quite like it in the world. Thousands of kiwi children, and their parents too, have grown up with Playcentre … book in for your three free visits today and come and join the fun.

We're off on an adventure!

Tomorrow (Wednesday 3rd June) our whānau will be out exploring at Macpherson Quarry.

At Playcentre, learning doesn't just happen within our gates. We love exploring our community, asking questions, making discoveries, and seeing where children's curiosity takes us. Tomorrow's adventure will be full of opportunities to observe, wonder, learn, and connect with the world around us.

There will be no session at the centre tomorrow morning while we're out exploring.

We'll be back at the centre on Thursday and Friday from 9am–12pm and would love to see you then.

Nobody really expects that when they join Playcentre…
they’ll grow too. 💚

You walk in thinking it’s all about your child.

Then one day you realise:
✨ you’re more confident
✨ you’ve made real friends
✨ you understand your child better
✨ you’re singing songs at home
✨ you’ve learned new skills
✨ you actually feel part of something

That’s what makes Playcentre different.

Our tamariki learn through play — and alongside them, parents and caregivers learn too. Not in a scary classroom way. In a real-life, “we’re all figuring this out together” kind of way. ☕🎨🌿

Playcentre Education isn’t about being perfect.
It’s about growing confidence, building community, and learning alongside your child in the moments that matter.

Some people join for the play dough…and stay because they found their village. 💛

This Playcentre Education Week, we’re celebrating every whānau member who has ever stepped out of their comfort zone, learned something new, or discovered they were capable of more than they thought.

If Playcentre has taught you something unexpected, tell us below 👇
We’d love to hear it.

Back in 1972, a group of 15 enthusiastic local mums met at Mrs Kay Carter’s house to discuss the establishment of what would become Patumahoe Mauku Playcentre. From humble beginnings at the Buffalo Lodge Hall on Woodhouse Road, to Mauku School in 1978, and finally — after years of dedicated fundraising — we found our forever home on Mareretu Avenue in 1994.

Fast forward to today, and we’re still here — still welcoming families as they find us, and still putting tamariki at the heart of everything we do. Our sessions are full of play, discovery, and connection: painting, baking, climbing, building, singing, splashing, imagining — all the good stuff that helps our little ones learn and thrive.
We’re a community where parents and caregivers learn alongside their children, and where belonging really means something.

If you’re looking for a space that’s local, long-standing, and full of life — come and visit us! We’re open Tuesday to Friday, 9am–12pm.

Bring a change of clothes for your tamaiti, some kai for them, and we’ll have the kettle on and a snack waiting for you too.

Nau mai, haere mai — we’d love to meet you.

What a term it’s been 💛

We’ve loved welcoming so many new families into our Playcentre whānau this term — watching connections grow, friendships form, and tamariki settle in and thrive.

We’re now taking a little Easter break 🐰🥕
(we carrot wait to see you all again 😉)

Whether you joined us this term or have been part of our journey for a while, thank you for being part of what makes this place so special.

We’ll be back in the burrow from Tuesday 21st April 🐣🌿

If you’ve been thinking about coming along, Term 2 is a great time to start — you can arrange a visit here:

YES — we do hire out our centre for birthday parties 🎈

We only book one party per day, so you’ve got time to set up, celebrate, and enjoy the day without feeling rushed.

We do keep things within reasonable daytime hours — just to respect our neighbours and the volunteers who care for our space.

It’s a relaxed, welcoming, child-friendly environment with plenty to keep little ones entertained.

And the best part? Every booking goes straight back into our Playcentre — supporting our tamariki and the whānau who make this place so special 💛

Worst case scenario?

You come to Playcentre…
your kids have fun…
you meet a couple of nice people…
and you leave an hour later.

Best case?

You wonder why you didn’t come sooner 💛

When Playcentre is your happy place.

Backpack on, gumboots ready, and heading straight for the gate — our tamariki know exactly where they belong.

There’s something so special about that little stride toward a place filled with friends, kaiako, play, and whānau. 💛🌿

Playcentre really is their happy place.
