Black fantails/pīwakawaka: Are a rare colour variation of the ‘normal’/pied fantail (they can interbreed). They make up ~5% of the population in the South Island (even less in the North Island). It is thought the dark colouring might have some advantages in cooler climates. This cutie was spotted near Middlemarch. Any other sighting out there? What other native birds have you spotted lately? 🌱 Who wants to grow their own natives? 🌱

Many of our native plants are loaded with seeds right now (and for a wee while from now).

As part of our Mid Taieri Wai catchment work, we are thinking about hosting a Native Seed Collection & Propagation Workshop (or similar) with the help from from the experts at the Otago Regional Council

What we could cover:
How to identify and "eco-source" seeds.
Processing different seed types
Tips for high-success germination
Open to ideas as to what people may want to learn/know.

Would you be interested in attending a hands-on session? Drop a "YES" below if you'd like to join! Very happy to get feedback on ideas
