Friends of Greendale Reserve sadly announce the death of Ian Corder, one of our volunteers and dear friend. Ian worked here at Greendale Reserve from its very early stages, and we thank him for his immense contribution to our beautiful place. Friends of Greendale will always remember and cherish the times we had together with Ian and wife and continuing friend and volunteer Gillian. All our love and support to you Gillian as you navigate this transition.

Off lead dogs are a major issue in New Zealand's native bush reserves because they pose a severe threat to ground-dwelling, flightless, and nesting native wildlife that are particularly vulnerable to predators. The instinctual urge for dogs to hunt, chase, or simply investigate wildlife can cause significant stress, injury, or death to protected species, even if the dog is usually well-behaved.

What you as dog owners do makes a difference.

Please follow our ‘dogs on lead only’ signs. Failure to comply can and should lead to conviction under the Dog Control Act or the Wildlife Act, to protect our native wildlife.

Also look out for signs warning about toxins used in predator control – they’re there to keep your dog safe, as well as native wildlife.

This is my favourite tree in the reserve - which I think is a kahikitea (Dacrycarpus dacrydioides, also known as white pine). But does anyone know if it is? Respond with your thoughts, and also - what is your favourite tree?

The theft of plants from reserves like Greendale is a selfish action that hurts our environment and hurts our community. If anyone has noticed any suspicious activity around the reserve, particularly over the last week, please let message us.

Beware all Grey Warblers – Shining Cuckoos are back! Just over two weeks ago, the first Shining Cuckoo of the season was heard (and seen?) at Greendale. Now there are a number of them calling in the trees. The female cuckoos find a grey warbler nest, throw out the original egg and lay their own in the nest and leave the little Grey warblers the job of feeding the increasingly large cuckoo. Fortunately, Grey warblers have learned from the experience and often breed and fledge their own young before the Cuckoos come back from the Solomon Islands.

Also around recently have been a pair of Kaka, seen and heard on a number of occasions, though not in the last few weeks. They are now presumably raising their own chicks on Kapiti or in Zealandia, but it would be good to have them nest in Greendale in future.

On Tuesday, volunteers set up a stall at Coastlands, under an event organised by Volunteer Kapiti, to recruit more volunteers for Greendale. It was a successful event with 2 new volunteers to help us and a third who is a distinct possibility in the future. Many thanks to all who helped out and worked so hard to make it successful
Unfortunately nobody managed to fully complete the quiz on Native Trees though often it was the easier trees that caused problems rather than the more difficult ones! The prize was to plant a tree of their choice from those in the quiz at Greendale.
