Recent research indicates that over 100,000 fishers are dying each year.

As part of our ongoing work into the protection of fisher’s and fishing communities, the FISH Safety Foundation is attempting to gather first-hand information from those in the African fishing sector.

We have created a set of questions that can be answered by both fishers and fish-workers to highlight their views on the challenges faced in the industry. We touch on risks to fishers, potential solutions, and try to gather the opinions of those that matter most.

We ask that you answer these questions and share the link widely to reach as many industry participants before April 7, 2024.

The Safety at Sea Essentials

We worked with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to develop a series of 13 posters to raise awareness of essential safety at sea topics for small-scale fishers. Each poster contains important information on the essential safety at sea topics, with simple messaging and striking imagery.

The posters were created by our talented Illustrator, Jason Kyle, and can be used in educational/training forums, or simply displayed and shared with others. Raising awareness and initiating the discussion on safety is one positive step to try and reduce the risk of harm occurring while working at sea.

Each week we will share with you one of the posters in the Safety at Sea Essentials series.

This week’s poster: ā€˜Prevent Collisions at Sea’.

Collisions are a common cause of accidents in small scale fishing and create a serious risk to safety. This week’s poster reminds fishers of some basic tips to avoid a collision situation, including keeping a proper lookout, maintaining a safe speed, and obeying the rules of navigation. Raising awareness of these issues will help reduce the risk of harm and will contribute to a safe fishing voyage.

The risk of a person falling overboard is always present at sea and this is a common cause of fatalities in fishing. This week’s poster encourages fishers to always be aware of a ā€˜man overboard’ situation and provides some basic procedures to deal with such an emergency. Being prepared and knowing what to do in such an emergency will help save lives.

One of the most common problems encountered at sea for small scale fishers is engine failure. This can lead to serious consequences such as drifting and becoming lost at sea. This week’s poster encourages fishers to take precautions to avoid this by always maintaining an engine. It is also essential to take on board spare parts, tools and carry alternative means of propulsion such as paddles or sails to be used in the case of engine failure.

Human error is seen to be the main cause of accidents at sea and tired people are prone to make mistakes. In that regard, fatigue is known as ā€œthe enemy of safety.ā€

This week’s poster reminds fishers of the dangers of fatigue. The importance of being well rested before going to sea, taking work breaks and rest periods while on the fishing trip (along with food and drinks to stay hydrated and refreshed) are all important steps that are often overlooked when people are busy. These simple tasks will reduce the potential for harm to occur, help a fisher to stay healthy, and will contribute overall to a safe fishing voyage.

This week’s poster highlights the importance of wearing a life jacket at sea. Having life jackets on board, wearing these, or at least knowing where to access and put them on quickly in the event of an emergency is crucial. We acknowledge an investment in a life jacket is a cost for a small-scale fisher, but a person’s survivability in the water is significantly increased by the wearing of a life jacket.

The Train the Trainer, Safety at Sea for Small-Scale Fishers programme has kicked off in the Philippines – here are some photos from the first day.

The programme, organised by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and facilitated by us, aims to provide practical training experience to course participants who can then subsequently provide safety training to local fishers in their regions.

The training package used for these courses covers a range of subjects, such as preparing for emergencies at sea, radio communication, emergency first aid, marine traffic rules, safety risk management and trainer fundamentals.

A huge thank you to all involved!
