"The main distinguishing characteristic of persistent young offenders is the number of problems they experience. They come from families who are overloaded with problems and under-equipped with coping skills. Together with their families, persistent young offenders show a range of problems that may include substance abuse, criminal behaviour, accommodation difficulties, poverty, unemployment, mental health problems, violence, neglect and abuse of every type imaginable, poor education and more." - Ministry of Youth Development.

Recently we celebrated Anita’s birthday, and she said it was her best birthday yet. Anita Mortlock is the head of our research hub at Te Herenga Waka. She is currently spending her sabbatical at Te Kāhu Tiu, while she works on gathering data and using her invaluable years of experience in education to support our kaimahi and help our kaupapa to flourish. Hari huritau ki a koe!

Jimbo Ratapu, Pou Mauri Ora, brings us to the table tennis table during term time:

“It drew the boys together to build and develop new pukengā (skill), and learn from one another. It became the tepu kōrero, the tepu whakawhanaungatanga, and the tepu o te wero, where laughter, conversation, frustration, and manawaroa (yearning heart) were all part of the game.

Through every match, the boys grew in confidence, strengthened relationships, and developed whakaute for one another, making the table a powerful space for connection and learning.”

Thousands of rangatahi across Aotearoa are caught in cycles of harm, disconnection, and incarceration.

Te Kāhu Tiu is now offering a kaupapa that transforms these lives through healing, education, and connection. It is a high-trust, high-accountability programme designed to restore identity, build capability, and regenerate whānau and community.

This has been a hugely exciting beginning, and we are so grateful to be underway.

Programme Director Mia Trotter reflects on the support felt during the first term of operation at Te Kāhu Tiu: “The staff have been magnificent and have gone above and beyond the call of duty in innumerable ways, our board and our key advisors have worked tirelessly to ensure smooth operations during our accreditation review and our community have continued to hold space and offer support in big and small, but always meaningful ways.”
