You may have noticed tree work taking place around the Health Trust campus this week. This is a three-day programme of work, which is expected to be completed tomorrow.
This has included the removal of a small number of larger trees.
We appreciate that tree removal can be an emotive issue, and it is never a decision we take lightly. These works are being carried out following consideration of tree health, public safety, and the impact some trees are having, or may have in future, on nearby buildings, underground services, drainage, accessways, and other key infrastructure.
Many of the trees on campus were planted with the best of intentions, at a time when the longer-term impact on surrounding structures and services was not fully understood. As custodians of the campus, we now have to take a careful, practical view of both current and future risk.
None of the trees being removed have notable protected status, and the work forms part of our wider responsibility to maintain a safe, accessible, and sustainable health campus for our community, tenants, staff, patients, and visitors.
We know some people may be disappointed to see established trees removed, particularly those that are prominent or familiar. We understand that. However, these decisions have been made with care, with the long-term wellbeing and safety of the campus in mind.
We would also like to acknowledge Hardfell - Professional Arborists, NZARB Registered Master Arborists, who are completing this work for the Trust with professionalism, care, and consideration for the campus environment.
Thank you for your understanding while this important work is completed.
