Continuing with our Foodie Friday Portions Series, we're sharing a simple way to understand portion sizes, using something you always have with you: your hand!

Knowing the right portion size for you can help you enjoy a balanced diet and supports your kidneys and overall health.

Two cupped hands = non-starchy vegetables
One fist = grains, starchy vegetables, or legumes/ lentils
Whole hand = fish
Palm of your hand = poultry, meat or meat alternative, e.g. tofu
Palm of your hand (cupped) = a snack portion of fruit, vegetables, or unsalted nuts

For people living with kidney disease, portion sizes are especially important. They can help you balance your nutrient intake and avoid consuming too much sodium, phosphorus, or protein, depending on your individual dietary needs.

What are some of your favourite ways to fill your plate? Share your ideas in the comments!

Winter can be tough on our wellbeing, especially for people living with kidney disease. Colder weather, less movement, and drinking fewer fluids can all affect bowel health and leave us feeling uncomfortable.

Small daily habits can make a big difference ๐Ÿ’™

Here are a few simple ways to support your wellbeing this winter:
โ„๏ธ Sip fluids regularly throughout the day within your recommended fluid allowance
โ„๏ธ Start the morning with a warm breakfast like porridge
โ„๏ธ Keep moving with a short daily walk, even indoors at your local mall
โ„๏ธ Include fibre-rich plant foods in your meals to support healthy bowel motions
โ„๏ธ Listen to your body and allow time to go to the toilet when needed

Using the Healthy Plate Model can also help:
๐Ÿฅฆ ยฝ vegetables
๐Ÿ— ยผ protein foods
๐Ÿž ยผ grains or starchy foods

Constipation and diarrhoea are common with kidney disease, but ongoing symptoms, severe pain, blood in bowel motions, or signs of dehydration should always be discussed with your renal team or healthcare provider.

Looking after your gut health is an important part of looking after your overall wellbeing this winter.

Thank you to everyone who joined our recent virtual session on fistula care ๐Ÿ’™

We were pleased to have Clinical Nurse Specialist Helen Hoffman, alongside Jenny sharing her lived experience, guide attendees through practical ways to care for a fistula, recognise early warning signs, and help protect dialysis access long-term.

If you missed the session, or would like to watch it again, the recording is now available here:

This week, we proudly celebrate the richness of Samoan language and culture, while recognising the strength, resilience, and contributions of our clients and community with Samoan heritage.

โœจ This yearโ€™s theme: โ€˜E afua mai i mauga tetele manuia o le nu'uโ€™ - From the high mountains are the blessings of the village.

This theme reminds us that strength, wisdom, and wellbeing are grounded in community, culture, and connection. Just as mountains stand strong and enduring, our villages and families uplift and support one another through every season of life.

Isaac, from our Ripley Community Dialysis House, shared some words of encouragement in Samoan for those living with kidney disease for us last year and we wanted to share this with you again for those who might have missed it.

Language is more than words. It carries identity, culture, history, and belonging. By sharing stories and honouring heritage, we help create communities where people feel seen, valued, and supported.

Protein does a lot for your body. It helps build and repair muscles, supports your immune system, and keeps your skin and overall health strong. ๐Ÿ’ช

If you have chronic kidney disease, the amount of protein you eat may need a little more attention. Your kidneys work hard to remove protein waste, so too much protein can place extra strain on them.

The good news? You do not need to avoid protein. It is all about choosing the right amount and focusing on quality sources.

Some great whole food protein options include:
๐Ÿฅš Eggs
๐ŸŸ Fish and seafood
๐Ÿ— Lean meat and chicken
๐ŸŒฑ Tofu, beans and lentils

Whole foods also give your body extra nutrients like iron, zinc, vitamin B12 and healthy fats. While protein powders and supplements can sometimes be helpful, they often provide lots of protein without the same nutritional benefits.

Check out the video for an easy guide to portion sizes and aim for around two serves of protein foods each day. Protein needs can be higher if you are on dialysis, living with other health conditions, or doing lots of physical activity.

We recently had the pleasure of hosting a small afternoon tea in the Waikato to thank our incredible financial supporters ๐Ÿ’™

It was a relaxed and meaningful time to connect, share personal stories, and enjoy good food together. We shared updates on the work we have been doing here at the Kidney Society and the impact their support continues to make.

Our Board Chair, Chantelle Good, and CEO, Kath Eastwood, were grateful to spend the afternoon alongside those connected to kidney disease - from diagnosis, to living with the condition, and for some, life after transplant.

Our work simply wouldnโ€™t be possible without the generosity and ongoing support of our community. Thank you for being part of it ๐Ÿ’™

A huge thank you to the Hillcrest Lions for generously funding two new recliner chairs for one of our community dialysis houses. ๐Ÿ’™

For clients spending up to 6 hours at a time on dialysis, comfort makes a real difference.

Community dialysis houses help people access flexible, home-like dialysis closer to their whฤnau and community, reducing the need for hospital-based treatment and supporting better quality of life.

Weโ€™re incredibly grateful for the support of organisations like Hillcrest Lions who help make this possible.
