Just a little Whare Manaaki update 💛

Although our usual After Hangs remains on hold until further notice, tomorrow’s booked sessions are still going ahead from 3–5pm.

We’ll have an ENM gardening workshop, along with the Library session featuring iPads and robots, so there will still be plenty happening.

Parents or a support person are required to stay for the duration of the session. We’ll also have coffee and milo available for the grown-ups to sit, relax, and have a chat while things are underway.

A huge thank you to Arise Care for partnering with us for our Pre Easter morning at Whare Manaaki this past Saturday. 💛

It was a beautiful morning of connection, laughter, and community, and it was so lovely to see tamariki and whānau come together to enjoy pancakes, the egg hunt, activities, and time spent alongside one another.

Ngā mihi nui to Arise Care for helping make the morning possible and for being part of creating a warm and welcoming space for our community. We are grateful for the opportunity to bring people together in a way that strengthens connection and celebrates the joy of being together.

He taonga te tangata — people are at the heart of all we do.

🌱 Garden fun at Whare Manaaki last week!

A big thank you to Mark from Environment Network Manawatū who came along and helped the kids build a trellis and plant some beans.

The kids also harvested a small handful of ripe tomatoes from the garden — always exciting to see what’s growing! 🍅

Let’s just say some of the beans may have been planted very enthusiastically… all in one spot 😄 so it will be interesting to see what pops up!

❤️ A couple of sweet highlights from our Month of Love at Whare Manaaki

Our tamariki enjoyed Valentine’s card making and received little parcels of fudge to take home.

We also wrapped up our colouring-in competition, with three winners receiving a sweet treat of chocolate and lollies. 🍫🍬

Thank you to all the kids who joined in and filled the space with creativity and joy. 💛

🍓🌿 Ngā mihi nui, Mark! 🌿🍓

A huge thank you to Mark from Network Manawatū for leading a wonderful strawberry propagating session with our tamariki.

The kids learned how to propagate strawberries and helped fill in some of the empty garden spots with fresh greens — getting their hands in the soil and learning how to grow kai from the ground up. There was so much excitement seeing how new plants can grow from runners and small cuttings!

Moments like these build confidence, practical skills, and connection to Papatūānuku. We’re so grateful for community partners who generously share their knowledge and help our space continue to grow — literally 🌱

Thank you, Mark, for investing in our kids and our garden beds!

Cheers to the last day of Waitangi Weekend! 🌞

As we mark Waitangi, it’s a great time to celebrate kotahitanga and connection — to each other, our whenua, and the communities we share 🌿

Last week at Whare Manaaki was full of fun — the kids found some sneaky strawberries 🍓, our games got a good workout, and a sunny water play afternoon kept everyone laughing and cool.

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, here’s to a month of aroha, laughter, and happy hearts! 💛

Our friends at the NZ Blood Service have asked us to help spread the word - they’re currently low on blood supplies and have lots of donation appointments available over the next few weeks.

If you’re able to donate, this is a simple way to make a huge difference for people in our community who rely on blood donations every day ❤️

We’ve topped up the kai cupboard with 1kg Yoplait yoghurts and wholemeal long rolls (previously frozen). Whare Manaaki will be open 3.45pm to 5pm today and 10am to 11.30am Friday 9th for anyone who wanted to pop in and grab anything.

🎄 Afterschool Hangs at the Whare – Holiday Break Notice! 🎄

Kia ora whānau! Our Afterschool Hangs at the Whare will be pressing pause over the Christmas & New Year period ☀️

🗓 Our last hang for the year will be Thursday 18th December
🗓 We’ll be back Tuesday 6th January and ready to roll into 2025 with more games, laughs, kai and good vibes!

Even though the sessions are on hold, Craig will still be popping in and out during the day so if you spot him around, make sure you duck in and say hi 👋

Thanks for an awesome year everyone – have a safe, happy, and well-earned festive break. We can’t wait to see you all again in the New Year! ❤️

A massive thank you to everyone who turned up last week to our Fire Up The Fun community event. Even though the weather didn’t play ball, it was awesome to see so many of our community out enjoying themselves.

Big thanks to the Mission4Men Charitable Trust team for putting on the BBQ and keeping everyone well fed. You guys were absolute clamazing.

A huge shout-out to the Manawatu, Taranaki, Whanganui-Ruapehu Police team, and especially Nuka the police dog, for coming along and spending time with our residents.

Thanks also to the Palmerston North Volunteer Fire Brigade Palmerston North Fire Brigade for hanging out with us and teaching some important fire safety skills. The kitchen fire simulator was especially cool, and I know plenty of people walked away with valuable knowledge about how to handle an oil fire safely. Your time was even more appreciated given the strike action you’re working through - we’re behind you 100%, and we appreciate everything our police and firefighters do to keep our communities safe.

Lastly, a massive thank you to the amazing team from Kāinga Ora for helping set up, pack down, and supporting the event throughout the day. I think a few of you may have missed your calling as face-painting artists!

Kia ora whānau. Quick update for our Hangs at the Whare crew:

There will be no after-school hangs this Thursday, 20th as I’ve got a hui to attend.

But good news - we’re back next Tuesday 25th, and it’s going to be an awesome week!

Waka from Palmy Library will be joining us on Tuesday then we roll straight into our Fire Up The Fun community event on Thursday 27th.

Can’t wait to see everyone back next week!
