Keen to do a one off volunteer day? Do a Stream Clean Up! It's a simple activity and we provide all the gear you'll need. We have a guide that will walk you through the important steps to planning and holding a clean-up event.

Step 1: Choose a section to clean
We provide a map with sections to choose from. We have divided Palmy’s main urban waterways into sections, able to be cleaned by a group of 10-20 people during a 2-3 hour event.

Step 2: Choose a date and Time
How often you would like to host an event is up to you. It could be a one-off, once a year, or your group might like to adopt a section and keep it clean on a regular basis.

Step 3: Read the guide so you know what you're signing up for

Community Comes Together for Napier Road Drain Clean-Up

On 9 September, ten dedicated volunteers from Manawatū Community High School rolled up their sleeves to clean up the Napier Road Drain. Armed with gloves, bags, and a strong sense of purpose, the team collected an impressive 40 kilograms of rubbish from the stream section.

The clean-up not only helped restore the health of the local waterway but also highlighted the power of community action. From plastic waste to discarded metal, every piece removed made a difference. The event was a great reminder that small efforts, when combined, can lead to big environmental wins.

Thank you to everyone who took part — your mahi is making Manawatū cleaner and greener!

Great to have the Massey Vet students back again for another stream clean! They said, "It was a great day and we really appreciated the use of the equipment and van."

Covering only 400 metres, they were able to collect a significant amount of rubbish. Some of the items included nine trolleys, bikes, cones, TVs, car parts like oil filters, vacuum cleaners, tyres, and fish carcasses!

Thank you Whakapai Hauora for leading the fight in 2025 against pollution of Palmy's streams. It's important to recognise that drains are man-made streams that have the ability to support native wildlife. If we pollute them, it degrades the drain ecosystem, and when the litter flows downstream: it pollutes our rivers and oceans. Two positive actions you can take to reduce pollution of waterways: try to avoid buying anything you don’t need, e.g. plastic-wrapping on food; & dispose of human-made stuff responsibly.
