A big thank you to Middle Districts Lions Club for hosting Porscha and Jess from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Manawatū last night! Middle Districts Lions Club

The Lions Club hosted us last night at one of their bi-monthly meetings, catered a divine meal for Porscha and Jess, and gave them a presentation slot to promote our mahi and talk to their club about mentoring.

A huge thank you to them for such great hospitality, and for being interested in the Big Brothers Big Sisters mahi!

Every Child Deserves Tomorrow.

This August we're highlighting one of Lions' Global Causes — Childhood Cancer, as it is Cancer Appeal Month in NZ.

Every child deserves the chance to laugh, learn, dream and grow. Around the world, Lions Clubs support children and families affected by childhood cancer through practical assistance, awareness, research and hope.

What a fantastic night at the 2026 Jimmy Carter Quiz Trophy! Despite the cold, students from 10
schools, supporters, and members of the Middle Districts Lions Club filled PNBHS College House for
an evening of fun, friendly competition, and plenty of brainpower. Congratulations to Horowhenua
College for claiming back-to-back wins, with Palmerston North Girls’ High School finishing runner-up.
A big thank you to all the schools, students, supporters, Lions, PNBHS, and Bruce McKenzie
Booksellers for helping make the night such a success. See you again in 2027!

Mānawatia a Matariki

As the Matariki stars rise, people across Aotearoa, New Zealand, come together to mark the Māori New Year.

Traditionally and today, the Matariki period focuses on three core principles:

💙 Remembrance (Matariki Hunga Nui)
Honouring loved ones who have passed since the last rising of the stars.

💙 Celebrating the Present (Matariki Ahunga Nui)
Gathering with whānau and friends, sharing food, giving thanks, and celebrating the blessings we have today.

💙 Looking to the Future (Matariki Manako Nui)
Setting goals, planting new seeds, and looking ahead with hope and optimism.

These values reflect the spirit of Lions — remembering those who have helped shape our communities, celebrating the difference we make together, and looking forward to the opportunities ahead to continue serving others.

Every year, hundreds of New Zealanders lose their lives to melanoma. Yet when detected early, treatment outcomes are significantly better.

That's why the Lions Cancer Trust created the Mobile Skin Screening Vehicle — bringing free skin cancer screening directly to communities across New Zealand. It helps people access checks they may otherwise delay because of cost, distance, or simply being too busy.

One check.

One conversation.

One early diagnosis.

Sometimes that's all it takes.

The screening vehicle is currently travelling throughout the South Island and will be heading to the North Island from mid August.
