TaneOra Alliance TOA. Tane Ora Alliance - Unlocking the Potential of Māori Men. A MOVEMENT. EVENTS

TOA hosts different events throughout the year to promote Māori Men's Health.

Tāne Ora Alliance (TOA) is a movement that seeks to Unlock the Potential of Māori men to positively participate and contribute to society. Prof Sir Mason Durie notes that “we are good at practicing a Tikanga on the Marae” and therefore need to apply the same principles to everyday life – such as establishing meaningful and sustainable relationships. THE PROGRAMME

TOA is also a programme that is b

alanced across the four aspects of wellbeing more commonly referred to as Te Whare Tapa Whā. In practical terms, this means that TOA workshops encompass all aspects of the men’s health, including their physical, mental, spiritual, and cultural. Men receive extensive gym training and evaluations, cooking and nutrition classes, experience with traditional Māori weaponry and the spiritual ties that come with it, and lessons about their Whakapapa (genealogy) and Whenua (their connection to the land). A highlight of the programme is the establishment of hononga (connections) between participants and the formation of a long-term Brotherhood. TOA has now successfully run 3 programmes: TOA (Palmerston North), TOA 2.0 (Palmerston North), TOA Tamakinui a Rua (Dannevirke), with intentions to expand to other localities regionally . TOA looks to expand nationally through a series of Māori Men’s Health Workshops in 2017.Watch this space as TOA releases more information about events that will be held regionally within Manawatu and nationally through out the Country.

TOA Week 7 in Review:
Noho Marae week: A culmination of the pukenga and growth from previous weeks.
We continued our taha tinana journey with Tepiwa Bullock doing boxing, strength/ conditioning, swimming and weights.
We had noho at Kauwhata Marae with TOA Kaumatua Papa Kewana Emery who shared his TOA journey and history of Ngāti Kauwhata.
Te Manu Mohio Johnson Tane Mahuta Kake cooked Vietnamese Chicken Salad learnt from Ian Drew at UCOL.
Tepiwa Bullock took us through haka rehearsals in preparation for celebration evening.
We used the spears created at Tiaki Taiao 1 (hinaki next time) to catch tuna and ika (trout) with Jeremy Padgett-Cutlass and Clint at Colyton Bridge.
We went fishing with Trig Johnson at Foxton Beach. Although the fish weren't biting, we practiced mau rakau learnt from Josh Strickland on the beach and played some touch.
The kai gathered was prepared alongside a hangi for a well-earned hakari (feast)! Bring on Week 8!

TOA Week 6 in Review:
Matariki: A week for celebration and spending time with whānau.
We continued our taha tinana journey with Tepiwa Bullock boxing/kick-boxing, strength/ conditioning, swimming and weights. We learned BJJ Americana Armlock with
Kiria Tangaroa at Highbury Whanau Centre.
Developed new pukenga (skills) with Brian Taniwha BT Welding & Fabrication LTD servicing a car.
Celebrated Matariki through Kapa Haka Festival, mau rakau with Josh Strickland and haka training.
This week had many beautiful kaupapa to connect with whānau and friends through Te Ao Māori. Life still presented it's challenges and tested our patience and resilience, but this did not hold us back it brought us together stronger.
Nau mai e Tāne. Te hiringa matua, te hiringa nō tuaukiuki. Te mauri o Tū-ka-maia.
Come to me Tāne. The perseverance of our fore-fathers, the determination of our ancient ones. The essence of Tu-the-courageous.

TOA Week 5 in Review:
A great week for reflection and reviewing our goals.
We continued our taha tinana journey with Tepiwa Bullock boxing/kick-boxing, mobility, swimming, weights, spin and learned BJJ take-downs with Morgan Emery.
The wet-weather post-poned our eeling and hunting. Sickness prevented our kaumatua from sharing tīkanga of the local whenua.
This challenged our determination and courage to achieve our goals. The early and cold/wet mornings invite us to avoid our goals and stay in bed. Getting up and fighting for our goals builds strength and resilience to push through obstacles.

TOA Week 1 in Review:
