This week is Volunteer Awareness Week, and we’d like to celebrate by sharing the stories of some of our incredible volunteers. Marie-Louise and Michael Ongley have spent a collective 22 years volunteering at our Arohanui Hospice Shops. They both have an incredible passion for the work they do and love giving their time to a good cause.

“It’s an interesting thing going from a business you can never get away from where you run out of time to nurture friendships, to being retired where you have a chance to make new friends. Volunteering with the Hospice is great for that. We have a lot of laughs as a volunteer team.”

You can read their full story here at https://www.arohanuihospice.org.nz/volunteer-awareness-week-2026/

If you’d like to get involved as a volunteer with Hospice we’d love to help you make 2026 your year to volunteer – just go to https://www.arohanuihospice.org.nz/helping-us/become-a-volunteer/

Next month, on behalf of Arohanui Hospice, Zimmerman Art Gallery is hosting a fundraising exhibition, featuring the works of four late local artists:

- Basil Register (1911 - 2002) - best known for his oil and watercolour paintings of New Zealand's coastal environments, rivers and historical landmarks.

- Jack Register QSM (1936 - 2018) - a lively and engaging artist, whose likeness is captured in a tribute mural on the Central Library wall next to Moxies Cafe

- Brian Booth (1920 - 2012) - a retired GP, whose care for people and advocacy for strong local communities are expressed in his colourful pastel drawings

- Frank Davis (1934 - 1983) - former head of the Art Department of Palmerston North Teachers' College, who also designed the "Rose City Mural" on the corner of Main Street and The Square

If you have have an art work by Basil or Jack Register, Brian Booth or Frank Davis that you are happy to donate, then we would be delighted to include it in next month's fundraising exhibition.

All the displayed art works will be for sale, and every dollar raised will go directly to Arohanui Hospice (there are no gallery fees or commissions).

Donated works can be delivered this month to your closest Arohanui Hospice shop, or to Zimmerman Art Gallery between 11am to 3pm Thursday to Sunday.

We’d like to give a big shout out to the Life and Health Centre team FMG who volunteered at our Palmerston North store last week! They did an incredible job accepting and sorting donations, hanging and pricing clothing, cleaning the store, and helping run the tills. Their positivity and energy was appreciated in store💙

Thanks to the FMG team for all your support, we’re truly grateful.

Earlier this year Christopher’s family had some pretty rubbish news - his step father had stage four cancer. That news got him thinking about what he could do to give back and support Arohanui Hospice. As a keen cyclist the idea emerged “why not try and ride for 24 hours?”

1 day - 1 man - 1 bike - 1 goal - raise as much as possible for Arohanui Hospice. He’d love to see as many people as possible come to the velodrome to support or even do a lap with him!

You can support Christopher by donating to his Give A Little at https://givealittle.co.nz/fundraiser/cycling-for-a-cause

We'll share his page which you can follow for updates in the comments!

This week is Hospice Awareness Week, and we’d like to take a moment to share with you what Arohanui Hospice care looks like in our community.

For many of those we support, Arohanui Hospice isn’t just a building- it’s care that comes to them. Last year alone, hospice teams made over 4,500 visits, with 81% of patients receiving support entirely at home.

Our services are available to anyone facing a life limiting illness. Last year alone our team cared for 1,216 patients, with demand growing every year.

Arohanui Hospice receives around 50% of our funding from government, with the remaining funding made possible through the generosity of our community.

If you’d like to support this care, you can find out more or make a contribution on our website https://www.arohanuihospice.org.nz/

Thank you for supporting Arohanui Hospice 💞

Did you know only half of the funding for Arohanui Hospice care comes from government? The other half (just over $4.7M) is raised in our community.

The care we provide — from visits in people’s homes, to support in our inpatient unit, and programmes for patients and whānau — is only possible because of the support around us.

So this Hospice Awareness Month take a moment to reflect on the care Hospice provides, and, if you’re able to, support the work we do by donating to our cause at https://www.arohanuihospice.org.nz/
