Environment Network Manawatū The environment hub for the region, connecting and inspiring communities to take environmental action

ENM is the environment hub for the Manawatū Region with the key purpose of facilitating and enabling communication, cooperation, and increasing collective action amongst its member groups and the wider community. ENM provides leadership by fostering and encouraging environmental initiatives in the region and our 62 current member groups are from throughout the Manawatū River Catchment with interests including biodiversity regeneration, freshwater management, citizen science, food security and resilience, sustainable living, alternative energies, and active transport. The network is administered as an Incorporated Society by a Management Committee, elected from member group representatives. The ENM Management Committee and all ENM representatives will meet at least four times a year.

The Environmental Initiatives Fund is supporting community food sovereignty across the Manawatū. One funded project is an ongoing garden where young people with mental health conditions learn to grow and cook their own kai using traditional practices, connect with whenua, and build resilience as part of their recovery.

With mentorship and community, they gain purpose and structure to their days, and can share the kai they've grown with their whānau. Gardening fosters a sense of achievement in a safe, nurturing space, especially for young people who are increasingly disconnected from nature.

Many of our small grants help food projects buy plants, compost, tools and materials, or cover transport costs for volunteers.

💚 Need funding for your environmental community project?
Individuals and organisations can apply for up to $1000 at any time. Projects must support one of these focus areas:

Food resilience, security and sovereignty
Biodiversity and freshwater quality
Reducing waste and supporting a circular economy
Climate action

📍 Projects must be within the Manawatū River catchment, from source to sea, including Palmerston North, Manawatū, and parts of Tararua and Horowhenua.

📅 Mark your calendars: our Large Grants ($1,000 to $15,000) open 1 January to 14 March 2027 for organisations.

Join the ENM Board

Nominations are now open for the ENM Board, and we'd love to hear from you.

If you care about the environment and want to help shape ENM's governance and direction, this is a great way to get involved. You don't need governance experience. We welcome different perspectives and will support you as you settle in.

What's involved:

- Monthly meetings (10 a year), with some pre-reading

- A two year term, renewable

- Representing ENM at community events and speaking up in council consultations

- Optional subcommittees: Te Tiriti Partnership, Policy and Funding Distribution

We're committed to upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi and to a board that reflects the diversity of our community.

It's all too easy to throw things away and buy new. One of the ways we've supported a circular economy is through the Environmental Initiatives Fund, which funded a "Sewing Machine Drive" to intercept used sewing machines and accessories from landfill and donate them to refugees new to Aotearoa.

The project was hugely successful, receiving 140 donated sewing machines from Palmy residents. Many had been stored in garages or cupboards for more than 10 years, and only a few were beyond repair (these were sold to Macaulay Scrap Metals).

Donors were delighted that their much-loved machines would help people new to the country, and many went on to become enthusiastic advocates, spreading the word very effectively.

The small grants fund continues to support projects that divert materials or items from landfill and support local communities.

Need funding to support your environmental community project?
Individuals and organisations can apply for up to $1000 at any time. The application form is concise and simple.

Your community project must support at least one of these focus areas:
• Improving food resilience, security, and sovereignty
• Protecting biodiversity and freshwater quality
• Reducing waste and supporting a circular economy
• Taking action on climate change

The Environmental Initiatives Fund provides grants for community projects that lead to better outcomes for the environment within the Manawatū River catchment, from the river's source to the sea. This includes Palmerston North, Manawatū, and most of Horowhenua and Tararua.

We support initiatives that:
🌱 Enhance community wellbeing through food resilience, food security and food sovereignty
🌊 Protect and enhance biodiversity and freshwater quality, and support the mauri of the Manawatū River catchment
♻️ Contribute to a circular economy by minimising waste and promoting the sustainable use of natural resources
🌍 Take climate action, supporting mitigation and adaptation

Small grants
Individuals and organisations can apply for small grants of up to NZ$1000 at any time. The application form is quick and easy to fill in.

The Environmental Initiatives Fund is made possible with support from Palmerston North City Council and Eastern and Central Community Trust. ENM administers the fund on their behalf.
