170 trillion plastic particles are afloat in the world’s ocean, and it looks more like a plastic smog than a floating island of trash 🌊Over time, plastic breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces adding to this smog due to exposure to wind, waves, sun, and sea life. Mandy Barker illustrates this in her photography piece featuring plastic containers with bite marks from turtles, sharks, and fish recovered from one of the remotest locations in the world, Henderson Island📸

Political support for repair reaches a new high in the UK

Representatives from more than 100 of the UK’s community repair groups were at a Right to Repair Gathering. They had a school group there with Team Repair who demonstrated how their kits are teaching young people how to repair. They had fixers who helped MPs get hands on with repair. And they were able to celebrate over 100 MPs signing up to the Repair and Reuse Declaration. And responding to the political opportunity, the chance to meet constituents and experience repair, and the 2500 people that e-mailed asking them to attend, they had a record number of parliamentarians come along: a massive 91 MPs in total!

Reusing instead of buying new is another powerful way we can reduce waste and live more sustainably. A great example of this is using a toy library rather than constantly buying new toys.

Toy libraries allow children to enjoy a wide variety of toys without the waste that comes from short lived play. Kids stay engaged because the toys are always changing, and nothing ends up sitting unused or being thrown away. It encourages creativity, sharing, and mindful consumption from a young age.

It’s a simple shift, but it makes a big difference. Fewer toys produced, less clutter at home, more joy and exploration for our kids, and more support for our planet.

Small choices like this remind us that we don’t need to own everything to enjoy it. Sometimes borrowing, sharing, and reusing is the most sustainable option of all.

Reducing what we buy plays such an important role in sustainability. “Buy less, choose well, make it last” is such a powerful ethos.

I’m sure most of us are guilty of buying way too many pieces of clothing without a second thought… and then feeling guilty about it, which makes it even harder to let things go. Before we know it, we’re left with wardrobes full of clutter and clothes we rarely wear.

Having a capsule wardrobe is so liberating. This process has genuinely re‑wired the way we think about buying things and the stress that comes with consumerism.
Seek out quality, sustainable pieces or thrifted second‑hand items. And if you don’t truly love something, pass on it.

What about you? Is minimalism something you’ve already been implementing in your life, or something you’d like to explore? I’d love to hear your experience in the comments ✨🙌🏼

✨ Emerging From Our Rescue & Repurposing Textiles Hui – Series Part 1 ✨

Heather shared the inspiring Ragfinery model — a similar‑sized city to Palmerston North created a community space where people donate fabric and yarn, which are then on‑sold. They also run mending and upcycling workshops. Learn more: https://www.ragfinery.com/aboutus

The conversation was centred on the idea of creating a Textile Recovery Hub for Palmerston North.
A big thank‑you to Georgie for mapping the interconnections in this space!

The circular economy system diagram, known as the butterfly diagram, illustrates the continuous flow of materials in a circular economy. There are two main cycles – the technical cycle and the biological cycle. In the technical cycle, products and materials are kept in circulation through processes such as reuse, repair, remanufacture and recycling. In the biological cycle, the nutrients from biodegradable materials are returned to the Earth to regenerate nature.

On the left-hand side of the butterfly diagram is the biological cycle, which is for materials that can biodegrade and safely return to the earth. This cycle mainly concerns products that are consumed, such as food. However some other biodegradable materials, such as cotton or wood, may eventually make their way from the technical cycle into the biological cycle once they have degraded to a point where they can no longer be used to make new products.

On the right-hand side of the butterfly diagram is the technical cycle, relevant for products that are used rather than consumed. This page will focus on the different stages of the technical cycle and look at how each step allows materials to remain in use rather than becoming waste.
