Every year, students from Palmerston North Intermediate Normal School with non-English speaking backgrounds get together to create a fantastic publication called First Voice. Assisted by mentors, the students create a piece of writing, often with accompanying artwork, based on a theme.
This year's theme was 'Influential Person'.

Now the work has been published as a book, and you can read all the great work from these students, both in English and their first language. It's a really cool way to experience the various languages present in Palmerston North.

This year's First Voice features 23 different languages!

You'll find First Voice 2026, as well as previous years productions, in physical format and also in ebook format, on the Library catalogue.

Thanks to Manawatu Multicultural Council Palmerston North for helping this project come to life.

Well done, PNINS students, and congratulations on your publication!

Find it on the library catalogue here:

Weโ€™re so excited to share Our Cultures, Our Stories โ€” a collection of stories written by children from our multicultural communities.
For this project, the children were invited to write in their first language and then share their stories with a wider audience through English translation. We think thereโ€™s something really special about seeing children use the language they speak at home to tell their own stories.
For some of our writers, the language they use at home is different from the language they use at school. Having the chance to see their own words, language and stories in a book is something to be proud of.

A big thank you to Palmerston North City Library for helping us bring this project together, and to all the parents and families who encouraged their children to take part. Most of all, thank you to our authors for sharing their stories with us.

Come and have a look!
A selection of the children's writing is currently on display on the

If you're at the library, pop by, have a read and support the young writers in our community. You might even discover a language or story that's new to you!
