Every conversation about dementia helps build a more understanding community.

Last week our Dementia Educator Kristin Taylor spoke with Hato Hone St John volunteers. They're often first on the scene at sporting fixtures and community events, and sometimes support people who are living with dementia or experiencing confusion.

The volunteers wanted to learn what dementia is and how to communicate in ways that help someone feel calm, safe and respected. Kristin shared practical tips on positive communication, like keeping things simple, giving people time, and focusing on the person rather than the condition.

Thank you to the St John team for taking the time to learn. It makes a real difference for the people you support.

It's Mental Health Awareness Week, and we're starting with Connect. โ˜•

For a person living with dementia mate wareware, connection doesn't need lots of words. Sharing a cuppa, a song or a quiet moment together is enough.

What we're doing: Our Living Well groups across our regions, create opportunities for people living with dementia to build friendships, share experiences and feel connected to their communities.

Over to you: Who will you share a cuppa or a quiet moment with this week? Tell us in the comments. ๐Ÿ‘‡

Some friendships last a lifetime, and this one has been stitched together with love ๐Ÿ’œ

Fifty-five years ago, 28 young women began their nursing training together at Grey's Hospital in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. Since then they've scattered across the world, but they've stayed close, meeting up for a reunion every decade and sharing life's highs and lows through their group chat.

To mark 55 years, one of the group, had a beautiful idea. Each friend sent her a fabric square, and from her home in Sweden, she sewed them into 28 quilts, one for every member of the group.

Her husband is living with dementia and is still at home with her. Sewing these quilts has given her some quiet time for herself while she cares for him. Instead of asking to be paid for materials or postage, she asked each friend to make a donation to their local dementia service.

One of those friends lives here in our region, and we're so grateful to receive her donation in honour of her friends journey with dementia.

Thank you both, and thank you to every one of the 28. Your friendship has endured across 55 years and many countries, and now it's helping whฤnau affected by dementia right here at home.

If you or someone you love would like support, our Dementia North team is here for you. Get in touch anytime.

Today is World Mental Health Day. ๐Ÿ’š We're going to be focusing on a day during Mental Health Awareness Week, next week.

Wellbeing matters for everyone on a dementia mate wareware journey, whether you're living with dementia, caring for someone you love, or supporting whฤnau and friends.

The Five Ways to Wellbeing are everyday things that help us feel good. They don't need to be big, and there's no right way to do them. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Swipe through for gentle ideas:

โ˜• Connect | Me whakawhanaunga - Share a cuppa, a song or a quiet moment. Being together is enough.
๐ŸŒธ Give | Tukua - A smile, a kind word or a small helping hand. Everyone has something to offer.
๐Ÿฆ Take Notice | Me aro tonu - Feel the sunshine, listen to the tลซฤซ. A moment can matter, even if it isn't remembered.
๐ŸŽจ Keep Learning | Me ako tonu - Try a new song, colour or simple activity together. It's about enjoyment, not getting it right.
๐ŸŽถ Be Active | Me kori tonu - Sway to music, stretch in your chair or potter outside. At your own pace, with support if you need it.

Which one will you try today? Let us know in the comments. ๐Ÿ‘‡

When someone living with dementia acts in a way that's hard to understand, it's often their way of telling us something. ๐Ÿ’›

The latest issue of Our Mind Matters is all about behaviour as communication. ๐Ÿ“–

Inside you'll find Jacqui's moving story of how her husband Kevin's diagnosis changed the way she saw years of difficult moments, practical tools like the HUGS and DICE approaches, and a reminder to be "a detective, not a judge" when things get tricky.

It's free to read online, and there's plenty in there for whฤnau, carers and anyone who supports a person living with dementia.

Read Issue 45 here: https://portal.dementia.nz/mind-matters/issue-45

๐Ÿ“ Want to talk it through with someone local? Our Auckland Dementia Advisors are here to help. Call us on 0800 433 636.

Put on your favourite song and move your body. ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿ•บ

Dancing is good for more than our feet. Moving to music can lift our mood, ease stress, help with balance, and bring people together, and all of that matters for people living with dementia too.

You don't need to know the steps. A gentle sway in your chair, a slow waltz around the lounge, clapping along or tapping your toes all count. What matters is enjoying the moment and doing it together.

For whฤnau and carers, dancing can be a lovely way to connect, especially on days when conversation feels harder. A shared rhythm, a smile, holding hands. Sometimes that says everything.

Why not try a little kitchen dance this week? Pick a song you both love and see where it takes you.

The Dementia North team across Auckland, Waikato and Lakes can share ideas for staying active and connected. Give us a call or pop into one of our programmes. We'd love to see you.

Your vote. Your choice. ๐Ÿ’›

There's no formal capacity test you need to pass to vote. Whether you vote, and who you vote for, stays your decision.

If you'd like help, it's there. You can get support with enrolling, reading your voting paper, or marking your choice.

When you vote, you need to be there yourself and able to clearly show who you want to vote for. No one else can vote on your behalf. That includes a care partner, whฤnau/family member or someone who holds power of attorney.

๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ Not enrolled yet? You have until midnight Sunday 25 October: https://vote.nz/enrolling/enrol-or-update/enrol-or-update-online

If you'd like to talk through what support could look like, our Auckland Dementia Advisors are happy to have a kลrero.

A dementia | mate wareware diagnosis doesn't take away your right to vote. ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ

The 2026 General Election is on Saturday 7 November, and the first step is making sure you're enrolled. You need to be enrolled by midnight on Sunday 25 October. Once voting begins, you won't be able to enrol or update your details.

Someone you trust can help you check or update your enrolment. If you can't sign the form, a support person can complete it for you. They'll also fill in a form so the Electoral Commission can contact them as your representative.

โœ… Check or update your enrolment: https://vote.nz/enrolling/enrol-or-update/enrol-or-update-online ๐Ÿ“ž Or call the Electoral Commission on 0800 36 76 56 for the right form and instructions.

Over the next few weeks we'll be sharing practical tips here for people living with dementia and their whฤnau across Tฤmaki Makaurau. ๐Ÿ’›

There's something special about songs from our childhood. ๐ŸŽถ

A few notes in, and suddenly we're back in the kitchen with Mum, dancing at a school social, or singing along in the back seat on a family road trip.

Music has a lovely way of reaching memories and feelings that words sometimes can't. For people living with dementia, a familiar song can bring comfort, spark conversation, and bring back a moment of connection with the people they love.

This week, we'd love you to try something simple. Put on a song from when you were a kid, or ask someone you love what they listened to growing up, and enjoy it together.

What's the song that takes you straight back? Tell us in the comments. ๐Ÿ’œ

If you'd like ideas on using music to support someone living with dementia, the Dementia North team in Auckland, Waikato and Lakes is here to help. Get in touch anytime.

A few hours of your time could make someone's whole week. ๐Ÿ’œ

Picture a room full of laughter, a cuppa in hand, a favourite old song playing, and someone who arrived a little unsure now chatting away like they've known everyone for years.

That's what happens at Dementia North programmes across Auckland every week, and we'd love you to be part of it.

We're looking for friendly faces to join our volunteer whฤnau. You could help set up, welcome people as they arrive, join in with activities or pour the tea. Often, just being a kind presence is what matters most.

โœจ No experience needed
โœจ Choose a programme, place and time that suits you
โœจ Meet great people and make a real difference
โœจ We'll support you every step of the way

For people living with dementia mate wareware and their whฤnau, our groups are a place to belong, stay active and feel like themselves. For our volunteers, they're often the highlight of the week.
