BIG SHOUT OUT #12 Winter sports support crew! You know who you are - all the sports mums, dads, grandparents and whānau who quietly volunteer their time behind the scenes so our kids can play, compete and thrive. They're the ones chopping fruit for halftime, washing muddy uniforms, cleaning football boots, pinning competition hair, sewing costumes, driving to trainings, standing on the sidelines in the cold, reffing/umpiring despite a distinct lack of experience, serving in the canteen, running the sausage sizzle, selling raffle tickets, keeping score, managing teams, sitting on committees, and somehow finding the time to do it all again next week... 😳 TAG a friend if this sounds like them! ❤️ Community sport doesn't just happen. It runs on THOUSANDS of volunteer hours given freely by people who rarely seek recognition and often don't realise they're volunteers at all.
To every parent and caregiver who gives their time, energy, skills and weekends so young people can enjoy the opportunities they do, thank you - you are the backbone of community sport, and your efforts make a difference every single day. 🌟

Big Shout Out #11 Bay Beach Clean. For the past few years, Bay Beach Clean has removed and responsibly disposed of more than 5,000 litres of rubbish every year from our local environment! Focusing on the coastlines and waterways from Waitangi to Kawakawa, this incredible volunteer-led initiative has inspired around 150 unique volunteers to answer the call, roll up their sleeves, don their blue jackets & gardening gloves and help protect the places we all love. Together, they're making a visible difference, one bag, one beach, and one clean-up at a time. 💚🌊 The OCEAN MIND project fundraises for Bay Beach Clean, covering the costs of clean-up equipment and rubbish disposal so volunteers can focus on protecting our local environment. A special shout out also goes to last year's sponsor, Phat House Brewing, cheers guys! 🍻
Volunteers meet at 10am on the last Sunday of EVERY MONTH at a local beach or nominated clean-up location. Whether they're seasoned regulars or first-time participants, every helping hand contributes to cleaner coastlines and waterways throughout the Bay. Anyone wishing to receive monthly reminders and details of upcoming clean-ups is encouraged to send Bay Beach Clean a message: [email protected] ... or just turn up! Next clean up is at Waitangi on Sunday June 28th, thanks to everyone involved - see you there. 🌟

Big Shout Out #10 The Paihia Community Safety CCTV network. This shout out isn't necessarily about people giving hours of their time, it's people and organisations quietly donating infrastructure, resources and ongoing costs for the benefit of the whole community. The community infrastructure champions! 🙌🏻
The Paihia Community Safety CCTV network only exists because local businesses, organisations and residents quietly volunteer locations, power, internet, equipment, monitoring and support. Most people will never notice their contribution, yet it benefits the entire community every day. There has been a noticeable decrease in crime since these cameras were installed. Thank you to everyone involved in this network, especially Gary. You make all the difference in a community that's looking out for one another. 🌟

THE BIG SHOUT OUT #9 Far North Latin Dance. Today we're celebrating the volunteers behind Far North Latin Dance. 🕺💃
Founded by Mercedes and Gustavo in 2017, this wonderful community group was created with a simple mission: to improve people's physical and mental wellbeing through dance. What started as a way to keep dancing themselves has grown into a welcoming and inclusive community where people of all ages and abilities can enjoy Salsa, Bachata, Cha-cha-cha, Son Cubano, and more. Through movement, music, laughter, and connection, they help people stay active, build confidence, make friends, and feel part of something special. Their regular classes and free social dance events bring people together from across the Far North, creating a sense of belonging and joy that extends well beyond the dance floor. Thank you, Mercedes, Gustavo, and everyone involved with Far North Latin Dance for the positive impact you have on our community. 🌟

THE BIG SHOUT OUT #8 Paihia’s Green-Fingered Volunteers. Today we’re celebrating the volunteers who help keep our town looking its very best. 💚🌿 These dedicated community members can often be found quietly working away pulling weeds, pruning shrubs, spreading mulch, planting flowers and herbs, tidying garden beds, watering young plants, and caring for the public spaces that make our town so welcoming. Their work may not always be noticed, but its impact is everywhere. Tricia Scott (Focus Paihia chair) and Jan Baker (2024 Focus Paihia Volunteer Of The Year) pictured here lead our industrious place makers and help beautify a town that residents are proud to call home and visitors love to explore. To all our volunteer gardeners, thank you for your quiet but mighty efforts. Keep your eyes on this page for our next Working Bee so you can join in this rewarding work and help Paihia bloom! 🐝🌺🌱🌟

BIG SHOUT OUT #7 Land Search and Rescue (LandSAR). When someone goes missing or is in distress in our wilderness, rural areas, or even closer to home, these highly trained volunteers drop everything and respond - day or night, in all conditions. There are about 30 of these unpaid professionals "ready to go" across the Far North, who bring skill, courage, and calm to some of the most critical and complex emergencies.
LandSAR volunteers are tasked by NZ Police or RCCNZ and carry out an extraordinary range of work, including:
-Field Teams: On-the-ground searchers using advanced tracking, navigation, first aid, and rescue techniques to locate and assist missing people.
-Specialist Rescue Teams: Supporting complex operations such as alpine, cliff, cave, canyon, and swift-water rescues.
-Operational Search Dogs: Highly trained K9 teams working tirelessly to locate people by scent.
-Incident Management & Support: Coordinating command posts, logistics, mapping, communications, and intelligence during live operations.
-WanderSearch/WanderWell support: Helping locate vulnerable people living with dementia or cognitive impairments who have gone missing.
Their dedication quite literally saves lives, often in the most challenging environments imaginable.
To every LandSAR volunteer, thank you for your skill, your time, and your willingness to show up when it matters most. 🌟

BIG SHOUT OUT #6 Paihia Tennis & Pickleball Club. For over 70 years, this community sports club has had a long-standing tradition and history of volunteering. The land the club was built on was donated by the Williams family in 1956, located at 7 MacMurray Road, Paihia. Being non-publicly funded, members made a huge volunteer effort to raise the funds to build the original courts and clubhouse. This tradition has been carried forward over the years with willing members volunteering their time to maintain the grounds, gain funding for court resurfacing and make the upgrades to keep the club a vibrant asset to its members, visitors and the Paihia community. 🌟 Keen to join or find out more, go to paihiatennisclub.com or email [email protected].

BIG SHOUT OUT #5 Scouts Paihia. Thank you to all the Kaiārahi and rangatahi in the Scouts New Zealand community, especially our local Paihia Sea Scouts. Driven by dedicated volunteers, they motivate and empower young people through outdoor adventures, community service, personal development and growth. Behind every meeting and activity are countless hours of planning and preparation to deliver exciting, age-appropriate programmes.
Our Kea section is led by 4 wonderful volunteers who balance motherhood, work and family life while helping children as young as five explore, discover and learn through creative indoor and outdoor activities.
At age eight, members move into the Cub section, where 2 dedicated Matua Tane juggle businesses and corporate careers while teaching core scouting skills, teamwork and the classic Kiwi can-do attitude.
As Scouts, young people begin pushing the boundaries of adventure, particularly on the water, guided by two experienced Kaiārahi with extensive sailing knowledge of the Bay. While raising families of their own, they dedicate years to teaching everything from knot tying and outdoor survival to water sports and leadership.
By the time our rangatahi become Venturers, they are focused on youth-led journeys, personal goals and expeditions under the guidance of an exceptional mentor who somehow always finds time to put others first.
No organisation thrives without someone keeping everything together. Our Group Leader spends countless hours on administration, supporting volunteers, stepping in when needed and keeping headquarters happy - all while continuing to serve every section of the group.
In an age of artificial intelligence and social media influencers, there is still no substitute for real people investing real time in one another. Without these volunteers, many young people would have very different opportunities and experiences.
Volunteering is its own reward, and Scouts Paihia is fortunate to have so many selfless people willing to give their time.
To everyone behind the scenes and everyone who keeps showing up week after week, thank you. 🌟
