𝗜𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱?

At our May BA5, we heard from Corey Hinde of Good Oil Marketing, who gave us a straight-talking look at what actually works in digital marketing for local businesses.

Here are three takeaways from the night:

🟠 Before you spend a dollar on ads, build MASSIVE trust first...
Running a Google Ads campaign for a business that hasn't laid the groundwork just might flop. Your social media presence, Google Business Profile, and online reputation all need to be working before paid ads will work for you.

🟠 Build social proof deliberately...
Ask your customers for before and after photos. Give them a QR code or a direct link to leave a Google or Facebook review. Make it easy for them to do it on the spot. Testimonials are key.

🟠 Then take the 3C Challenge.
Connect with 1 person. Make 1 comment. Create 1 piece of content. Every day. Even two minutes a day done consistently builds the kind of trust that makes everything else work.

If you're keen to get found online and want a hand with Google Ads or SEO - get in touch with Corey at Good Oil Marketing

Missed this month's BA5 or want to become part of our association, come to our next meeting or flick us a message.

So very excited to show off the plethora of awards we picked up at tonight’s 2026 Community Newspaper Awards!
Alice Parminter came runner-up in the Best Senior News Journalist category.
We also won the Best Community Involvement category for her investigative series looking at methamphetamine use in Thames.
And finally and most spectacularly: The Valley Profile was named Best Community Newspaper, winning the Frank Veale Memorial Award!
So much hard work over this last year, and so lovely to have that acknowledged ❤️

Thank you for having us, Maritime Park Paeroa!

Our May Business After 5 was hosted by Fleur McDermott at the Historical Maritime Park in Paeroa, and if you aren't sure what we are talking about you need to come to the Christmas light show held there!

But Fleur wants everyone in Paeroa to know, they aren't just about the lights. There is so much great history around the river boats and paddle steamers and what how maritime transport was a big part of this area. Today the park operates as a historical museum and function centre, run largely by dedicated volunteers with Fleur as the admin, logistics, event planner and much more.

There's a big vision for this place and what it could become. This is a park anyone can visit at any time, the grounds are gorgeous and there are the river cruises! Fleur would love to see more people simply come and enjoy the park. Bring a picnic. Wander around. Soak up the surroundings. It belongs to the community, and she wants Paeroa people to feel that.

And any of our local schools are welcome to come learn more about their local histories, she would love to connect with you to showcasing the significant historical past.

Thank you Fleur for opening the doors and sharing your heart for this place. Be sure to go and check it out.

Back in 2019, we shared the incredible story of Gary Johansen and Paeroa Marine and Cycle Centre. At the time, Gary was celebrating 40 years of keeping Kiwi boaties on the water.

A lot has changed since then, but the core things haven't. Gary is still New Zealand's longest-standing Yamaha dealer, and his son Sam—who was just an apprentice in this article—is now the workshop manager, keeping the family legacy alive alongside a growing team. From local Coromandel holidaymakers to fishers in the Chatham Islands, their famous "one-stop-shop" approach remains completely unmatched.

If you love a classic Kiwi success story built on pure grit, hard work, and good old-fashioned street smarts, this archive feature is an absolute must-read.

Your business is out there — but if customers can't find you on Google, it's like you don't exist.

This Thursday we have Corey Hinde from Good Oil Marketing coming in to talk about exactly that. Corey works with small businesses across New Zealand and he's going to break down the online stuff like how to polish your Google Business Profile, improve your SEO ranking so you show up when people are searching locally, and how Google and Facebook Ads can bring more customers to your door.

Whether you run a shop, a trade, a service, or anything in between, if you're not showing up online, you're losing business to someone who is.

This month's BA5 is hosted by Fleur McDermott from the Maritime Park Paeroa. The park is a museum and function centre dedicated to preserving the region's maritime history, as well as a site for campervans to park up at. We are looking forward to hearing more about this local business story.

Thursday 21st May, 5.30pm at The Refinery. If you haven't been to a BA5 before, come along and meet us!

The Main Street Clean-Up ripple effect continues...

After our Main Street Clean-Up in April, it's been great to see the momentum carry on.

A shoutout to Pizza Hut Paeroa, who took the initiative after the day and got out and cleaned up their own shopfront. We see you!

We also want to say a genuine thank you to Barden & Co Legal for their financial contribution towards supplies for the clean-up. Not everyone can be there on the day, but their support meant we had what we needed to get the job done.

A cleaner, tidier main street is something we all benefit from, stay tuned for other ideas in the pipeline for our main street.
