A photo of a “nationally critical” Matuku (Australasian Bittern) was recently captured in our wetlands by the Te Nukuroa o Matamata crew!

With the destruction of 95% of wetlands in NZ over the past 150 years, there may be as few as 250-500 mature Matuku remaining nationally and probably less than 5-6 on the Taiari.

Wetlands restoration, raupō stands, healthy native fish populations and predator control are key to the ongoing survival of this taoka species.

A critically-endangered native bird with a booming call, the matuku-hūrepo, has experienced a small boom to its population thanks to efforts to preserve a wetland ➡️ https://bit.ly/4942cwY
