Ōtorohanga Creative Conduit

Ōtorohanga Creative Conduit To build relationships for creative people and create pathways to creativity for the community.

Operating under the umbrella of the Ōtorohanga District Development Board, the Ōtorohanga Creative Conduit is bringing creativity to the community via workshops, events and exhibitions. The kaupapa of the Ōtorohanga Creative Conduit is to connect communities together, specifically the creative community with the larger community to build constructive relationships for creative people and create pathways to creativity for the community. We believe creatives should be paid fairly for their skills so the workshops are priced to cover their hours, materials and venue and any extra made is then put back into the kete to reduce the costs of future workshops, to provide free places in some workshops or to put on free events for the community. Please follow this page to receive new workshop notifications and follow/like us on Instagram and share or tag people in our posts to get more of our community informed and engaged. Peace of Pounamu - Brenda, Andrew & Coreena Opie

Nō Aotearoa ēnei Pounamu - Genuine NZ Greenstone.

We love being in a world surrounded by natural beauty that involves creative art, natural elements and the energy of healing and peace.

The spirit of the land we call home is inspiration to our lifestyle and lovingly handcrafted talisman Taonga. Enhancing what is already beautiful, using natural spring water, rongoā and peaceful intentions. It is an honour to create precious links between people in different times and places.

I tuku iho, i tuku iho - Generation to generation.
Ko Ngāti Maniapoto rātou ko Tainui ko Te Āti Haunui ā Pāpārangi, ko Ngā Paerangi ko Ngāti Pākehā ngā iwi.
Tīhei Mauri Ora!

The stars first gathered as swirling gases, then took form to become stone - the building blocks of life. They too are our tūpuna, our ancestors. Found within The South Island, it is believed, Pounamu chooses to be revealed. Millions of years record its passage from the magma within earth to its extensive journey to the mountains, rivers and beaches, into the hands of kaitiaki.

The deeper meaning bound within it’s wairua, Pounamu embodies the essence of the land, the spirit of love, heart stone, healing stone. A true companion of compassion and connection, the healing way.
Of the before and beyond...

Come and see these pieces in person in the exhibition space - Girl Guide Hall Saturday 17th & Sunday 18th October, 10-4pm and maybe one of them will choose to be revealed to you.

Rita Shaw

Pencil and paper were never far away when Rita was a child growing up in Switzerland. Drawing came natural to her and she kept it as a hobby until coming to live on a sheep farm in Kiritehere, where she was heavily involved in farm activities and raising 3 children. Until recently, Rita felt her creativity had deserted her, fallen victim to the long hours working and the responsibilities to family and the animals in her care.

A chance meeting with an artist led to Rita taking part in a pastel workshop, her first ever, with Maxine Thompson. “I took to pastels like a duck to water.”
Now Rita is painting commissioned animal portraits, native birds, bees and recently ventured into human portraits. You can find her on Facebook under Rita Shaw.Art.

Rita is also known locally for taking commissions so come to see her work at the exhibition 17/18th October 10-4pm

Daniel Ormsby

Tena Koutou.
Ko Daniel Ormsby toku ingoa.
No Otorohanga ahau
Ko Maniapoto te iwi
Ko Ngati Kaputuhi me Ngati Uekaha nga hapu

Daniel is a traditional and contemporary Maori artist who can float between worlds. A foot in the past and a foot in the future.

He is a ta moko artist\ tattooist, pukenga whakairo (experienced woodcarver), painter, educator and community motivated human.

Daniel is also a father of two with grandkids.

Kiaora

Art is a way of life for Daniel, a lifelong passion, particularly within the Maori art arena. It is through tradition and cultural responsibilities that he has found his place and purpose in the world, with a multitude of mediums available to record and preserve tribal history, whakapapa (genealogy) and religious or spiritual beliefs.

Daniel is driven by the journey to discover and push through creative boundaries as well as the excitement of watching things develop from an idea into a reality. The responsibility of being in charge of his creative vision, knowing that his art and his actions will go on to inspire others, are all facets of his approach to art.

Through his reserved approach, Daniel has learnt to observe, understand and collate ideas and it is through his artistic interpretation that he has found a voice that can be heard.

Come experience Daniel's mahi during the ArtBeat Festival 17/18th October.

Daniel will also be onsite as a working artist so you can observe him at work and there will be set times to ask questions. Due to safety reasons we will be asking all spectators to observe from behind the safety rope quietly watch a master craftsman at work.
