As we wrap up the Ōtara Block Christmas Lights, our hearts are so full.
Thank you to every single resident who joined forces to create something truly special. Together, you didn’t just put up lights, you showcased the true Ōtara: proud, generous, united, and full of aroha. What you created lit up our streets and reminded everyone who visited just how powerful community can be.
This kaupapa drew thousands of people from all across Auckland and Aotearoa, many who may never have come to Ōtara otherwise. It changed perceptions, broke down barriers, and showed a different narrative. One of warmth, creativity, and care. It increased feelings of safety, brought everyday neighbours even closer together, and turned our streets into spaces of connection, laughter, and belonging.
The turnout and feedback this year were incredible, overwhelming in the best way. With the numbers we welcomed, it’s clear this kaupapa has outgrown what residents can carry alone. To continue safely, sustainably, and well into the future, we would love to build the right infrastructure and support around this resident-led kaupapa, while always protecting its heart, values, and community ownership.
To our incredible rangatahi who worked tirelessly behind the scenes, thank you. From keeping traffic flowing, sorting rubbish, roaming the streets, and making sure people felt safe, welcomed, and cared for, you carried this kaupapa with maturity, mana, and heart. We see you, and we are so proud of you.
This kaupapa also supported families financially over the Christmas period, while providing joy, comfort, and light to so many who truly needed it. For some, it was more than lights, it was hope.
A huge mihi to the organisations who helped us restart and re-ignite this kaupapa:
✨ Mercury Energy for the Christmas light starter boxes and power credits for Mercury customers
✨ City contractors for loaning us traffic cones
✨ Mana Security for loaning all of their RTs
✨ The Community Builders NZ Trust (CBNZ) for the hi-vis vests and support with signage
This was an incredible display of what happens when community, rangatahi, and organisations come together with one shared goal, lighting it up for all.
We’d love to invite future partners and supporters who believe in community-led solutions to walk alongside us next year, including Tataki Unlimited, Auckland Council, the Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board, and any corporate or community organisations keen to support this kaupapa, while allowing it to remain proudly resident-led. Traffic Management, Waste Management & Signage to name a few.
From our local residents (Everitt Rd, Ross Ave, Cooper Cres, Te Ara Piripono, Whitley Cres, Clayton Ave, Terry Place, Hamill Rd) to you all, Merry Christmas & a Happy New year.
Ōtara hard. Ōtara proud. ❤️🎄✨
