Black Sheep Animal Sanctuary Ōtaki

Black Sheep Animal Sanctuary Ōtaki A safe an sustainable space to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome abused and neglected farm animals. Where possible, we rehome to loving forever homes.

In November 2009 the Animal Protection Society bought 26 acres of land to set up a sanctuary for animals founded on animal rights principles. Our primary aim is to provide a refuge for abused, neglected, and mistreated animals, and especially former farm animals. In New Zealand, a country where the economy depends on the dairy and meat industry, there are many animals in dire need of care and prot

ection. We rescue and rehabilitate abused animals, including ex-dairy cows, ex-factory farm pigs, and ex-battery chickens. For the many animals which cannot be rehomed, we offer a safe space where they can live out the rest of their lives in peace and security, in the company of others of their kind. The Sanctuary is owned by the Animal Protection Society, Inc., a registered charity. We seek to support both human and animal rights, and are against all forms of oppression. We are pro-feminist, and anti-racist; we oppose sexism, inequality and environmental destruction. We acknowledge local iwi and local hapū as tāngata whenua. We are a space that is vegan for humans.

Happy Pride Month from the Black Sheep Animal Sanctuary! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

June is a great time to celebrate the entire LGBTQIA+ and takatāpui community, but as a queer-run oganisation, we aim to be a safe and welcoming place year round. However, protecting trans rights is particularly crucial right now as hatred is steadily rising.

If you live in Aotearoa New Zealand and you wish to stand with the trans and intersex communities, now is a great time to make a submission against the Legislation (Definitions of Woman and Man) Amendment Bill if you haven't already done so.

It just takes a few minutes to show up in solidarity with trans people and recommend that the bill be voted down. Submissions close on the 2nd of July and can be made here:

https://www3.parliament.nz/en/pb/sc/make-a-submission/document/54SCSSC_SCF_9E8E8A14-A51C-4567-AB33-08DE9053A7D1/legislation-definitions-of-woman-and-man-amendment-bill?utm_source=ig&utm_medium=social&utm_content=link_in_bio&fbclid=PAb21jcASaznJleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBzcnRjBmFwcF9pZA81NjcwNjczNDMzNTI0MjcAAaduXozCE_xX9BYqu6Oe0ZlA2pYxXlC3723_q8zp4zHR3N8iUnJibyWl652pPA_aem_eTIj2J4YOiuNmL8CaRd3pQ

And if you are a cis woman, you can sign the "They Don't Speak for Us" petition below to support trans women.

If we all speak up and make our voices heard, it can have a huge and life-saving impact.

Recently Freckle went to the vet to get her annual calicivirus vaccination and health check. Though vet visits can be stressful for bunnies, the vaccination is absolutely essential for their safety and longevity. The vet also takes a look at their teeth to monitor for any issues. Luckily, from what the vet could see, Freckle’s teeth are in good condition. She is definitely on the older side at 9 years of age, so monitoring for any health issues is extra important!

Happy National Animal Rights Day! 🐑🐐🐄🐖🐓

Having respect and compassion for all animal species will always be a priority for us. Instead of asking what animals can do for us, we like to ask what we can do for them!

If you want to play a role in creating a better world for animals, deciding as a consumer where you spend your money is a great place to start. Along with saying no to meat, dairy, and eggs, and instead choosing plant-based alternatives, you can also choose cruelty-free products that have not been tested on animals, avoid buying clothing made from animals, and say no to forms of entertainment that rely on animal exploitation.

Animals are living beings, not expendable commodities, and they deserve to live happy, long lives ❤️
