From Victor:
Hei whanau, just a quick reminder and follow-up from my email dated 16th March for our one-day wananga on Saturday 11th April please.

This one day wananga was set to plan our year (or two) in terms of what types wananga we are wanting to hold as we haven’t had any wananga for a few years now and we are needing to remind ourselves of those responsibilities we have to each other in several areas that are needing attention ie:

History and background of our marae
Historical places / landmarks of interest
Iwi / hapu / whanau connections
Tikanga and Kawa
Waiata
Marae governance structure
Succession

The above are suggestions only and it would be good to discuss these and others on the day. We realise that this day won’t suit all, but those that can attend on behalf of your whanau then please do. Noting day light savings end 29 March, so our day will be shorter, timings suggested as follows:

9am – karakia / whakatau / whanaungatanga
korero
12pm – tina
korero
4pm – tina
Korero whakakapi

I’ve attached our marae charter as a starting document to understand before then and will send out others before our wananga. For our Trustees, please let your whanau know and will see everyone on the day.

From the chair:
Hei whanau, just a quick update for a one-day wananga on Saturday 11th April. We did mention at our AGM last month that we would do this in March but have found the busyness of our marae bookings, kapa haka regionals, easter weekend and a whole host of other things have put March out of reach so we will settle for Saturday 11th April before ANZAC comes around.

This one day was to set out our year (or two) in terms of what types wananga we are wanting to hold as we haven’t had any wananga for a few years now and we are needing to strengthen ourselves in several areas that are needing attention ie:

History and background of our marae
Historical places / landmarks of interest
Iwi / hapu / whanau connections
Tikanga and Kawa
Waiata
Marae governance structure
Succession

The above are suggestions only and it would be good to discuss these and others on the day. We realise that this day won’t suit all, but those that can attend on behalf of your whanau then please do. Noting day light savings end 29 March, so our day will be shorter, timings are as follows:

9am – karakia / whakatau / whanaungatanga

12pm – tina
korero
4pm – tina
Korero whakakapi

Let us know if you’re coming for catering purposes please.

Te Tawharau posted on fb:
Tēnā koutou e te Iwi o Te Whakatōhea,
Over the weekend, our trustees met to continue the important mahi of shaping the future direction of Te Tāwharau o Te Whakatōhea.
They have been working towards finalising our key focus areas, vision, and values, which will guide us into the future.
With our foundations in place, we can prepare and wānanga the next phases of Te Puia o Whakaari, our Long-Term Plan (LTP), in alignment with Te Pou Tāhua (Commercial), Te Pou Oranga o Te Whakatōhea (Social, Health, Education and Te Taiao) and our Executive Leadership Team.
This wānanga will focus on:
✨ Identifying and prioritising existing and future initiatives
✨ Ensuring our kaupapa clearly aligns with our agreed focus areas
✨ Strengthening the pathway forward for our people
The decisions being made now will help position Te Tāwharau as a future-focused, values-led iwi grounded in our whakapapa and confident in our direction.
This video that we have shared is a reminder of all those that have came before us and how they have shaped our decisions to help us look to the future to move
forward, as one as Whakatōhea.
We will share further updates as this mahi progresses.

From the Chair:

Hei whanau, just wanting to say our Hui a Tau is done and dusted and to acknowledge those in attendance in-person, on-line, apologies received and condolences to our whanau Kereopa who couldn’t be with us. Not too sure but we had about 30 whanau in attendance I reckon and quite a few new starters to our AGM which was heartening to see. Needing to acknowledge Lamorna Rogers who came down from the Far North of Taitokerau, Broughton Williams from Tamaki, Evelyn and Samantha Hansen from Kirikiriroa, little bit of travelling from them but appreciative having you all with this day.

Just to advise those not in attendance, you have to put up with me for another year but do appreciate your support as we continue to move our marae and whanau forward to shape us to be the best we can be. For myself it was very noticeable the excitement, the buzz that was happening after the hui when we were having a kaputi together or maybe it was the kai lol. Anyway, Herewini and Trevor are carrying on with their roles on our Trustee Committee. Brendon continues in his role as our Chief Financial Officer (CFO), pretty flash name but effectively that is what his role is, Dwaine and BJ continue to look after the house and grounds as required. Also advising we did not have our Marae Committee AGM due to the absence of Puti and unsure if we will have that AGM in the near future. Should that be the case, through the Trustees, seeking your permission to continue with our current Marae Committee appointments until the new year?

I have attached a few documents for you to read that came up in our hui today as follows:

Chairs report:
For our Trustees, my focus on this report was about us and our absence in our roles and responsibilities as Trustees.
For our marae whanau, wanting to highlight our absence when needed.
Letter of support:
Kutarere Marae Trustees accepted and signed a letter of support against representatives from Roimata Marae who purport to convene an “Upokorehe Hapu” hui and to direct TTOTW to release Upokorehe Hapu funding to Roimata Marae Trustees at today’s hui.
This letter was read out and approved unanimously, signed by our Trustees in attendance and will be sent to TTOTW Chair.
Wai 3237
This is Roimata Marae Wai 3237 claim for Upokorehe Iwi status.
Please note they are claiming Kutarere Marae as a marae for their purposes.
Whilst they claim tikanga and kawa as their foundation of their korero, that is very much absent with our marae as they continue to use L.A.W to do their bidding.
Kutarere Marae Charter
My apologies I need to scan this and will resend as a look forward

We also supported and approved a koha for one of our Ngai Turanga mokopuna travelling with te kapa haka o Te Karu overseas to a cultural exchange with other indigenous cultures and are excited for that mokopuna. In all our korero we had, I forgot to mention a proposal from Joyanne Onekawa who sent through a letter for me to table (as she couldn’t make the hui today) but have attached her letter above. Whilst I’m not looking for answers via this email, it is FYI, I will table at our next hui for your consideration.

Last but not least, we did mention coming together to have a wananga to set out the rest of the year next month (March). For those that aren’t aware, our marae committee hui are always held on the 3rd Sunday of every month starting at 10am which lands on Sunday 15th next month. We have Te Pou Oranga o Te Whakatohea Rangatahi Aquacultural Wananga at the marae that weekend so suggesting we might shift our marae committee hui to the following Sunday 22nd, use Saturday 21st as our wananga day, those that might travel from afar might want to stay the night if you want to attend the marae committee the next day, lets us know whanau?

Trevor, can you tentatively book those dates please?

Mauri ora whanau
