Te Kapehu I Te Kainga

Te Kapehu I Te Kainga A Tikanga journey using a cultural compass to return home Maa nga marae, maa nga hapu ano e kokiri, maa te kainga ano te
kainga e whakamaru. Kati, takoto!

E tuu nei, ko Te Kapehu i te Kainga, hei ara whakapiki oranga mo nga whanaunga, nga
whanau me nga kainga e huri tuara mai ana i te kai M**h. Taahuri rawatia ana ki te ara
matakite e mauri ora ana ano, e mauri tau ana ano te noho whakaahuru o te tangata,
whanau me te kainga. Te Kapehu i te Kainga serves to create a cultural healing pathway for those of us who wish
to withdraw from the destructive p

resence of methamphetamines in our kainga/home, and
to instead, rediscover our own potential towards healing, wellness, and the ability to
reclaim our authentic whanau, kainga and community life. Te Kapehu i te Kainga is a Pakanae marae, hapu based tikanga pathway towards wellbeing,
providing local cultural interventions and solutions that enable positive change to take
place. Te Kapehu is guided and supported by local whanaunga (Relations), people who have
expertise in different areas to assist individuals, whanau and kainga who have a strong
desire to implement change towards their own wellbeing. Our goal is to utilize, cultural interventions and healing to allow whanaunga (Relations)
people the opportunity to embark on a re-discovery and a re-claiming of whanau, kainga
(homes) community, and environment, without the destructive forces of addiction.

“Poua nga pou e tokona ake nei te mauri ora tangata”

“Paatuuwatawata te tuu o te pou matua, ko te pou tuupuna, ko te pou ariki, ko te pou atua”

MARAE-ROA
PAKANAE

Te Kapehu also serves to create a collective marae, papa kainga, hapu and community
movement to reduce harm and violence. M**h is not welcome in our community. Haere, e
hoki e P ki te ara i haere mai ai koe, whakangaro atu ki too rua, ki too poka e kore ano e
whakaarahia. tuupapaku tonu atu ai!!! Maa te reo puu ano me nga ringaringa puu ano o te katoa i te kainga o te wahapu o
Hokianga, e haukotia te tupu me te whangai o tenei mate me oona kikino ki roto i nga waahi
katoa o te kainga. Maa tatou puu ano tatou e kawe, e arataki, e manaaki, e whakamaru me
te whakaora ake. Kawea te mauri ora ki te ao o te kainga, huri noa, p**a noa. It will only be by the voices and actions within our collective communities (hapu and local)
that will halt the spread and distribution of this socially debilitating drug within our region. For only we, as a community can create change, grow leadership, serve with compassion,
provide safety and wellbeing for all of our people. E oho, e ara, maaranga, e tuu ake, pikia te ara poutama ki te ora
Kia tuu ngatahi me te mahi ngatahi e taea e tatou te tuuraki te mate P nei
By standing and working together we will overcome the P epidemic
Nau mai, whakap**a i a koe, he toi tuu, he toi ora ki te ao tuuroa
He aro nui, he aro roa, he aro tiketike ki a koe e Io te wananga
Wananga a nuku, wananga a rangi, wananga puu taketake te mauri ora
Takitakina te ara, waahia te ara, whakapapa te ara ki a koe e Io Matua
He ara oranga ka p**a mo tenei pia, mo tenei tauira
Ki te whei ao, he ara ka p**a ki te ao maarama - Tihei waa Mauri Ora

Wonderful to be back doing our beautiful kaupapa.

It has been amazing to have the presence of Rakau Whakamaru and to see the continued enthusiasm from everyone to keep building, learning, and growing. Watching beautiful mahi whakairo come to life, while seeing confidence continue to develop within our whānau, is truly inspiring.

We were also grateful for the opportunity to reconnect with Te Taiao through our hīkoi along the Hauturu Track in Waiotemarama. There is such a powerful and uplifting presence in walking amongst our ngahere and alongside our awa, feeling the mauri that surrounds us.

This week also provided a much-needed space to lift and nurture our wairua following the recent loss of many of our whanaunga over the past two weeks. It was an opportunity to focus our energy and mauri, releasing what needed to be released and holding close what needed to be held onto.

We leave this week feeling grateful, refreshed, and inspired. Ngā mihi to everyone who was part of this journey.

Looking forward to what is yet to come.

The past two weeks have been truly amazing. We have achieved so much together through kaupapa, meaningful kōrero, learning, and connection. Feeling incredibly grateful for all the experiences and memories shared along the way. 💛

Our beautiful Wānanga Patu Watawata had an awesome turnout, with powerful kōrero shared amongst everyone. Spending two beautiful days together at the marae was something truly special.

We also had an amazing time exploring parts of our whenua, including climbing up Whiria Pā. It was a privilege to listen to the rich kōrero and history shared about Hokianga such a meaningful and humbling experience.

Another wonderful highlight was our time in Toi Whakairo, where we had the honour of Matua Nopera sharing his wisdom, kōrero, and carving tips with us. So grateful for the knowledge and guidance that was passed on.

Feeling blessed and thankful for these past few weeks, the people, the learning, and the memories made. Looking forward to the weeks ahead and all that is still to come. 🙌🏽✨

Another special week for Te Kapehu i te Kainga and all the incredible people involved. These kaupapa continue to grow because of the people who show up with open hearts, willing hands, and a genuine love for our hapori.

Huge gratitude to Rakau Whakamaru for the aroha, effort, and hard mahi put into preparing the hāngī for Whakawhenua. A big mihi as well to all the whanaunga who came out to support every helping hand, every laugh, every shared moment added to the wairua of the day.
celebrating the many beautiful kaupapa happening throughout our community was something truly special. Days like these remind us of the strength in kotahitanga, the importance of connection, and the beauty of people coming together with purpose and aroha.

A heartfelt shoutout to our amazing Whata Korero (coffee cart) wāhine, whose hard mahi and manaakitanga kept everyone warm, smiling, and cared for throughout the day. Your energy and dedication helped create the welcoming atmosphere we all enjoyed.

Not a Trend. A Taonga. The Rise of Moko Kauae in Modern Aotearoa”

There’s a quiet but powerful shift happening across New Zealand — and it’s written on the faces of wāhine Māori.

Moko kauae, the traditional chin tattoo, is more than ink. It is whakapapa, identity, and wairua made visible. For generations, it represented leadership, strength, and deep ancestral connection. Today, more Māori women are reclaiming it — not as a fashion statement, but as a declaration: this is who I am.

What’s changing is how it’s being carried into the modern world.

While traditional tā moko was carved using uhi (chisels), creating grooves in the skin through a deeply sacred and often painful process, many artists today use modern tattoo machines. These newer techniques are faster, more precise, and less invasive — but still guided by tikanga, meaning, and cultural authority.

Some see this resurgence as empowerment — a powerful reconnection to culture, identity, and pride. Others question whether the modern approach risks losing the depth and sacredness of traditional practice.

But one thing is undeniable: moko kauae is being seen, respected, and talked about like never before.

And maybe that’s the point.

Is the modern rise of moko kauae a powerful cultural revival — or is something being lost along the way?

In such a short time, the growth of our whanaunga has been powerful to witness confidence rising, connections strengthening, and wairua shining through in every moment. The space was filled with laughter, deep kōrero, and a real sense of unity.

From learning new waiata together to stepping into our mahi whakairo, the transformation has been undeniable. Watching each kaiwhakauru bring their whakaaro into form through whakairo showing patience, discipline, and pride in every strike of the chisel has been nothing short of inspiring.

There is real mana in this kaupapa. So proud of everyone involved, and deeply excited for the journey ahead. This is only the beginning.

Our Toi Whakairo kaupapa is happening every Thursday at Rawene Campus, and it’s been an awesome space for learning, growing, and creating together.

This kaupapa is about more than just carving. Our whānau are learning the art of whakairo while also being guided through tikanga, local kōrero, and whakapapa. It’s a space full of whanaunga where creativity, connection, and culture come together.

We share stories, build skills, and strengthen relationships with each other in a safe and supportive environment. It’s a powerful way to connect, express ourselves, and grow together through toi Māori.

If you’re keen to learn whakairo, deepen your understanding of tikanga, or just be part of a kaupapa that uplifts and connects nau mai, haere mai.

Awesome day today at Te Ara Rongoā 🌿
We were lucky enough to spend time with Serena and Lovey in their beautiful space, and to receive all the amazing kōrero they shared with us. Hearing about the immense mahi that has gone into Te Ara Rongoā and acknowledging all the hands and hearts that have helped make it possible was truly inspiring.

We got stuck in with a bit of weeding and clearing around the banana trees, and some of us had the chance to help with seed planting as well. So many great learnings, meaningful moments, and awesome kōrero shared throughout the day.

Feeling grateful and really looking forward to working alongside Te Ara Rongoā again in the future.
