Love our Wetlands - Waiheke

Love our Wetlands - Waiheke A community conservation project restoring wetlands on Waiheke. For more info and to check out our progress: https://arcg.is/1ayCXC1

Bring your whanau, neighbours and friends as we restore the natural waterways of our beautiful motu. As an island community, Waiheke is highly connected to the moana and the waterways that surround us. Wetlands improve water quality, control flood waters and maintain surface water flow during dry periods. Many rare flora and fauna depend on wetlands for their habitat. Healthy wetlands reduce the e

ffects of climate change by sequestering carbon dioxide, as well as reducing erosion. Since 2015, Love Our Wetlands has worked with the local community and volunteer groups towards the ecological restoration and protection of seven significant wetland habitats on Waiheke Island โ€“ Te Matuku, Te Whau, Matiatia Headland, Rangihoua, Okahuiti, Te Huruhi Bay and Owhanake. Through this mahi, we are creating vibrant habitats where our native species can thrive. If you would like to be a part of our restoration mahi, let us know! ๐ŸŒฑ As our peak planting season wraps up, we want to give a huge shout-out to all the amazing community and volunteers whoโ€™ve joined our fabulous LOWW team to celebrate 10 years of restoration in Waiheke's wetlands! This season with their help we got 7,190 native trees in the ground (...and we're not quite done yet!)

๐Ÿ’š A special thank you to some of our supporters Terra & Tide - Waiheke Touring, Walking and Sailing Adventures EcoZip Flying Fox Adventures Auckland Council Waiheke Local Board who have donated trees and their time to this fabulous project!

๐Ÿ‘‰ If you would like to become a restoration hero contact [email protected] or if you are unable to join the team you can still support the mahi by donating to our Dig Deep campaign: https://wrt.org.nz/digdeep/

A massive thank you to the awesome team from ANZ who joined us at the wetlands recently! ๐ŸŒฑ You planted around 50 kฤnuka, added rabbit protectors to these and the pลซriri and tackled a serious amount of honeysuckle โ€” all with such great energy and 'motivation'. We loved having you out and canโ€™t wait to welcome more of your crew this week!

โœจ This year marks 10 years of restoration mahi in the wetlands โ€” and it's all thanks to the incredible volunteers like these guys who have contributed over the years. This aroha and dedication are helping regenerate this special place for generations to come ๐Ÿ™ Stay tunedโ€ฆ weโ€™ve got something exciting in the works to celebrate this huge milestone!

Big mihi to our key supporters: Waiheke Local Board, Auckland Council and Trees That Count โ€” we couldnโ€™t do this without you.

A big THANK YOU to the Beca volunteers who joined our Love Our Wetlands team on 18 March. We had a great time tackling invasive Japanese honeysuckle and planting native grasses.

Without a doubt, corporate volunteering is a valuable tool in working towards our long-term aim of restoring all wetlands on Waiheke, so we really appreciate the team coming on board! Your mahi made Waihekeโ€™s ecosystems more valuable through increased biodiversity, water purification ability, and storm protection (just to name a few).

When climate action and businesses come together to protect and restore our wetlands, they become more resilient in the face of change. Itโ€™s a great team-building exercise that also directly contributes to a more sustainable tomorrow for the community of Waiheke.

๐ŸŒณ A special mention goes to the totara trees, which were part of our planting efforts last year. ๐“๐จ๐ญ๐š๐ซ๐š is a taonga species with deep cultural significance for Mฤori, historically used to build waka, whare, and carvings. Totara roots play a crucial role in protecting the wetland, preventing erosion, and stabilising the soil. With its large size and dense foliage, totara also provide shelter for native birds and help improve water quality by filtering excess nutrients. These trees can live for over 1000 years.

A huge thank you to all the volunteers who contributed to this important workโ€”your aroha and dedication are making a lasting impact on the health of our wetlands ๐Ÿ™

๐ŸŒฑThis group got stuck in with releasing trees and grasses that we planted in the last years, ensuring that they can survive. One tree that is particularly important for the health of our wetlands is the kahikatea. The roots of mature kahikatea act like a sponge, filtering water and sediment. Additionally, they are New Zealands tallest trees and therefore can provide shade for other plants๐ŸŒฒ

A massive thank you to all the amazing volunteers who joined us on this mission - without your help, none of this would be possible!

๐ŸŒฑRangihoua is a wetland where our Love Our Wetlands Team has been working for nearly 10 years now. Because of that it is a great wetland to actually see the progress of our work. However, many of the plants we have planted over the years need to be freed from weeds that grow over and smother them. This is one of the important tasks these amazing volunteers helped us with. Thank you for your support - your efforts ensure that native plants survive and contribute to a healthy wetland๐ŸŒฒ

๐ŸŒฑMany of the trees we plant are easily covered by invasive grass, which smothers them and prevents their growth. ๐ŸŒฑThis group got stuck in with removing invasive honeysuckle from one of the areas we planted native trees in last year. Honeysuckle climbs over and smothers most plants from ground to medium canopy. We can already see a noticeable difference compared to last year, because the honeysuckle grows slower due to the shade of the trees we have planted. Furthermore, we planted grasses along the stream to help improve the health of the awa๐ŸŒฒ

๐ŸŒฑThey removed invasive honeysuckle and planted native grasses. Honeysuckle is an invasive vine that grows over our native plants, smothering them and preventing their growth. This is why it is important to remove the honeysuckle vines to protect Waiheke's native plants and give them space to grow. By replacing invasive species with native grasses, we can help support biodiversity and create a healthier ecosystem.๐ŸŒฒ
