Weather Woes at Cooney Reserve Working Bee. Today's Volunteer Team (Lise, Murray W. and Murray G, Roger, Jacquie, and two newbies, Catherine McD and Racheal) braved the elements. Not ideal conditions for us, but by the end of our session loads of weeds release was achieved. We picked up from where we had left off last time with mulching further along the flax walkway and at the edge of the carpark. Very satisfying to clear out moth vine and pods, blackberry, privet, deadly nightshade, montbretia and ginger. Murray W. gave the brushcutter a workout on blackberry and gorse, finally giving these nasties a taste of Cut n Paste to finish them off. Well done Ladies and Gents. πŸ‘

This POST is to say THANKS. So, we have been EXTREMELY FORTUNATE to be supported by THE CENTRE TRUST (our local Op Shop) with the recent 2026 round of grant funding. We have been able to provide our Volunteers with items to use from the "Wish List". We are thrilled to finally have a secure cabinet for storage, along with a Wheelbarrow (Roger and Jacquie loved putting these items together; NOT. The cabinet was okay to sort, but getting the wheel fine-tuned on the Wheelbarrow took a little bit of hammer work). We were able to purchase loads more of our preferred Stainless Steel Spades (not enough at Mitre 10, so we had to order them in). NICE to also get some McGregor's secateurs, Wolf Garten weeding tools, arm cover sleeves (great when dealing with Moth Vine, Blackberry and Gorse), and the GRUNTY Loppers. The Volunteers gave the SHINY Spades a christening at the TINOPAI PLANTING BEE on Friday. THANKS VERY MUCH TO THE CENTRE TRUST and their Volunteers for their continued work to help others in our Community benefit. πŸ‘

Tinopai Volunteers' Planting Bee (Friday, 19 June). Yesterday, our Mighty Team (Murray W, Chris, Roger, Lise n Graham & Jacquie) met up for another session of planting. The 100 mixed native plants were positioned and planted in an hour thanks to Murray W. bringing along his trusty post hole digger. It was wonderful to have TukTuk Snowy back in use to cart our equipment and plants. Given that it's Volunteers' Week, we'll certainly remember when these plants were added alongside the cycleway. Thanks to BOPRC for funding these new additions via our budgeted Grant and to Waihi Native Plant Nursery for providing them. The Team rounded off the morning with a cuppa n catch up. β˜•οΈ 🍰 πŸ‘

Tinopai Match Fund Working bee. This morning the Team completed the WBOPDC 25/26 Match Fund work by planting in the remaining 50 native plants. The Team (Murray W, David, Lise and Jacquie) had the plants sorted quickly thanks to Murray W. kindly using his post hole digger.
We've planted down through the zigzag walkway, and then along the fenceline for 120 metres.
We will be adding in a further 100 plants in the next few months thanks to some Grant funding we have also received from the BOPRC. Then, our plan is to hold ongoing monthly working bees to maintain the Tinopai area that we've planted.
Am looking forward to seeing how this native plant corridor develops. Thanks also to Waihi Native Plant Nursery for all of our plants. πŸ‘

Traps Circuit, Golf Course, Peach Beach to Precious Reserve. Certainly had a different mode of transport today. The OEMI chaps have the TukTuks across at Field Days, so today I gave my bike a whirl. Sure was a fabulous day. The regular golfers were out on the course and plenty of wildlife to see; a Black S**g, x6 White Faced Herons, x8 Kaka, and about 100 Royal Spoonbills plus the Fantails and Kingfishers. The traps were quiet, with only one Huge Rat (edge of Conservation Pond) and a tinsy mouse (along Kayelene Place). Enjoyed the sunshine and got some exercise.

The Green Fingers Group of volunteers held a morning weeding session along the Conservation Pond edge beside the 7th Fairway, Omok Golf Club. This time, Lynda, Jenny, David, Lucie, Elaine & Jacquie's mission was to release a variety of weeds from around the Cookianum Flaxes and Oi Ois, as well as removing plenty of Kikuyu from the Saltmarsh Ribbonwoods and Rushes. All up, the Team covered about 140 metres in the two hours spent. It was four months since this garden was last weeded and we removed three bale sacks of weeds. Certainly a beautiful crisp sunny morning, with great company. Nice work Team.πŸ‘

TukTuk Snowy and I had an outing to check the traps along the cycleway at Tinopai. Only one large Norway rat caught in a DOC200 this time.
We received a donation of a number of Double Set DOC200 traps. (Thanks, Emma). The internal metal mesh is rusted out, so I am cutting out new sections, filing the mesh down, so it's nice and smooth, and then adding these back into each trap for repurposing. Yesterday, I was able to put one of these traps to use. It was such a gorgeous day, but what I didn't like seeing was the amount of rubbish (beer cans) which are building up on the grassed area alongside the farm on Omokoroa Road (just across from Nell's Dell), especially since we have just had a community litter clean-up event. I did see this sign (pic below) a while back. If we had a few of these set out around Omok, they might make people think twice before littering.

The Green Fingers Group, Omok Golf Club. Such a spectacular 🌞 day for the volunteers (Jenny, Lucie & Trevor, Sue, David, Jacquie and Murray W.) to arrive and support our group's lead, Lynda Smith, with planting up the 10th Tee-off gardens. Of course, a number of other dedicated course volunteers had spent time too and built a small retaining wall, added soil, weedmatted and mulched the 10th Tee-off area (you know who you are)πŸ‘in prep for our team planting this area for its revamp. We were fortunate that we had a number of the plants donated by a club member/PFO, plus an iddy bit spent out of Nathan (our greenkeeper's budget). Thanks so much to Murray W. for digging all the holes with his post hole digger (certainly expedited the process). What a trooper! We were so spoilt. In no time at all, the 70 Carex Flagellifera (from Strategic Nursery) and the 21 Coprosmas (from Kereru Nursery) had found their new home. Nice receiving all the positive feedback from the gents and ladies out on the course this morning. Another area sorted. πŸ‘
