Kaharoa Kōkako Trust

Kaharoa Kōkako Trust The Kaharoa Kōkako Trust is one of the longest operating community conservation group in the Bay of Plenty. He aha te manu, kāhore i te ngahere?

A group of volunteers who have been focusing on nurturing a relict kōkako stronghold through pest management and habitat preservation in the Kaharoa Forest, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand since 1997. We focus on protecting the kōkako and all the interconnected native plants, trees, and creatures that make up the Kaharoa ngahere. As a result of our ongoing pest management, Kaharoa forest is now home to

one of the largest and most significant kōkako populations in New Zealand. What is a bird without a forest? Together we can make a difference for both our manu and our ngahere. Volunteers are the backbone of our trust. Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, he toa takitini - my strength is not as an individual but as a collective. Check out our website and fb page for upcoming volunteer day events - All are welcome! Feel free to get in touch or come along to a volunteer day to see how you too could become part of our story and efforts to safeguard and protect our precious taonga.

While helping bring in the remaining pindone bait from our autumn rat control operation, one of our Kaharoa Kōkako Trust trustees captured these beautiful fungi photos.

A big thank you to all the volunteers who helped with the bait retrieval. Your efforts are helping protect kōkako and the rich biodiversity of the forest.

New Zealand is home to thousands of fungi species, many of which are found nowhere else in the world, making them a unique and fascinating part of the native biodiversity.

Fungi are an important part of healthy forests. They recycle nutrients from fallen leaves and wood, enrich the soil, and form underground partnerships with trees that help forests thrive.

Let us know if you spot something interesting while walking the public kōkako track in Kaharoa Forest.

Thank you to the MDRT Foundation, with funding administered through Predator Free New Zealand Trust, for supporting the purchase of two new AT220 traps for Kaharoa Kōkako Trust.

These self-resetting traps are a game changer & we would love to expand our network of them in the forest. Unlike traditional single-catch traps, AT220s (NZ AutoTraps) can automatically reset themselves multiple times, allowing continuous protection for longer periods.

They are effective against rats, stoats, and possums.

Every predator removed helps create a safer environment for kōkako, whose survival depends on strong predator control.

Support like this, helps to ensure Kaharoa Forest remains a thriving home for native species for generations to come.

Experienced volunteers needed this weekend to help remove Pindone from bait stations. Please contact us via email to find out more 💚🌿🪺

These two kōkako nests were checked on the same day.

The one with the chicks is within an intensive grid of bait stations and traps. The one without is just outside the network.

Without intensive predator control, up to 90% of kōkako nests fail.

Populations in predator-controlled areas are growing up to 50% per year, and today there are over 2,300 breeding pairs - a huge increase from the 330 back in the 90s.

Predator control works.
