Mandeville parkrun #12 6/6/26

A wet overcast Saturday morning with no sunrise welcomed me for another parkrun adventure, off out to Mandeville for my 8th event. Not running today, time to fill a volunteer role that I’ve been chasing for 17 weeks, achieving my v17 (17 different roles 17 times) filling the role of Marshal at the turn around point. Thrilled to have this personal challenge ticked off, v18 will be the next target, I guess. A pretty good turn out today, with 28 finishers. It wasn’t looking like much at 7.50am, funny more volunteers than participants.

Its amazing the stories and chats shared afterwards at parkrun, Mark Anderson had the best adventure earlier today. Having taken the bus from Christchurch, his drop point was just over the Waimak bridge. There's still quite the hike out to Mandeville from there, a few parkrun participants had passed him run/walking out (no one gave him a lift), he still managed to get across the line before the Tailwalker, quite the finish considering. And missing the turn around point, adding an extra 700m to his 5km parkrun. FYI, Mark was in Japan for their very first parkrun back in 2019, that’s a cool thing to have been a part of. #1, 34th in 21.40min that day, 343 finishers. This event has continued to grow with a total of 33,016 finishes in 315 events.

Catherine Maidment joined the fun today running her 16th different venue, Catherine is quite the parkrun superstar. Just two weeks ago achieved the title of being Scarborough parkrun’s 20,000th finisher. How cool is that? Mandeville had their 1000th finisher last weekend, Shelley Taylor gained that title!

Genda Norris was great company afterwards at the Bakery for coffee, talking parkrun stats etc. Today being the 9th event we have shared, two of which were inaugural events. Halswell Quarry and . Genda has only to complete, to tick off the whole 26 south islands parkruns. Another amazing parkrun achievement is the 2x palindromes of 32.23min & 35.53min at and , getting 2 is amazing.

Always, a big thank you to the RD for the day Bryant Hardy. I wasn’t there for the briefing, off to my Marshal point while this was happening, remembering that being RD for the day means missing out on a run/walk volunteer credit. Other legends as well Timekeeper, Barcode Scanner, Finish Tokens, Marshals all give their time and give up there run/walk so you enjoy yours, I’m very appreciative of this, today was an opportunity for me to give back to parkrun and fill one of these roles.

Jo Taylor & Corey Cahill have continued their streak of events here at Manderville with 11 to Corey and 10 to Jo, out of the possible 12 events, who’s going to fold first? Mark Shaw’s finish time of 24.42min is a Palindrome! Nick Grant was very close to one as well with 21.13min.
Ryan Kiesanowski led the way with a handy 19.01min in doing so achieving his 25 milestone. Eva Ronberg first girl home in 27.18min, ticking off her 17th different parkrun venue as a first timer.

1 Milestone achieved today
25 Ryan Kiesanowski, 7 of these here at Mandeville. 4 of these 7 gaining the #1 token. Also, a sharp PB here at 17.58min, wet conditions under foot today slowed him ever so slightly. Pegasus must be a favourite having had 13 finishes there with a 16.20min PB, very good!

Mandeville welcomed 12 first-time participants. All twelve have used their barcodes before. Welcome everyone, hope you all enjoyed the experience. 1,557 first time finishes New Zealand wide on Saturday.

🚨🚨🚨🚨Sending out an SOS -

Not sure how to kick off your weekend? Why not join our amazing community parkrun team as a volunteer! 💚💛

We’re looking for just two more volunteers to help out on the field this weekend. No experience needed – we’ll show you the ropes, and it’s a fantastic way to be part of the event.

Fun fact: volunteers consistently score higher on the happiness scale in parkrun surveys! 😊

If you can lend a hand, we’d love to hear from you. Come and be part of something special in our community.

It's a long weekend, which means another shortened working week. As this was the fifth parkrun of May 2026, it also meant five opportunities for parkrun fun for those fortunate enough to attend all five events. Excluding special parkruns, this was only the second month in 2026 to feature five parkruns, following January.

After arriving back in Christchurch on Thursday evening, it was a pleasure to see how much the city has changed since I grew up there. This trip was also a special one, as I had travelled down for my mum's birthday during the long weekend.

The temperature was a chilly 4°C at the start of parkrun. After squeezing in an early morning workout near my parents' place, I arrived just in time, not quite realizing how little spare time I had left. To my surprise, both Nathan and Tim Heaver were at Mandeville. The last time I saw them was only a month ago when Nathan celebrated his milestone birthday, reaching a new age-grade category for parkrun and any other events he may be involved in.

Following the first-timers' briefing, the course sounded straightforward enough on paper. However, it proved to be a little more challenging once underway. The route consists of a double out-and-back course, combining grass sections with gravel and stone-covered trails, all set within a wide-open landscape.

Having spent the week battling a virus, I had struggled to maintain my usual pace and expected to take things relatively easy. Despite that, I felt stronger than anticipated during the run and managed to move a bit quicker than planned. Given the circumstances, I was more than happy to take that as a win.

First Male finisher was Nathan HEAVER with a time of 18:29 on his fourth visit to this course
First Female finisher was Lucy OWEN with a time of 24:50 as a first timer to this course

13 course personal bests were achieved. Congratulations to Stacey GARRETT, Corey CAHILL, Harvey HARPUR, Jace WERNER, Bernard KLOS, Sam COUGHLAN, Chris BROWN, Elliot FRANCE, Louie YATES, Louise FRANCE, Gareth HUSBAND, Jeanette MCINTIRE and Liz MCLEAN

Officially in the UK, Darren Wood has become the first person to reach the remarkable milestone of 1,000 run/walks. This incredible achievement represents almost 20 consecutive years of parkrunning every Saturday, excluding special events, without missing a single week. Danny Norman, who was also attending Morden parkrun, is not far behind, sitting just 36 parkruns short of Darren's total.

After completing my parkrun, I spent some time chatting with a few fellow participants before making a quick dash back towards Christchurch for another sporting commitment. I would have spent some time at the parkrun cafe, if I was not surprised by the Heaver’s appearance and made other plans. That is what all surprises are for. It was particularly satisfying to once again complete all of the current Canterbury parkruns. It felt like a long time since I last visited the Ohoka area and it's fantastic to see a parkrun thriving in rural Canterbury. I'm sure the participation will continue to grow as more people discover it through word of mouth. It is great for those chasing their Wilson Indexes (event numbers).

I may see some of you at the Wellington Marathon on Sunday 28th June as I am entering in a category.

Thank you all for putting on such a wonderful event.

Enjoy the rest of the long weekend and with King's Birthday Monday upon us, winter officially begins on this coming Monday.

Happy parkrunning and touring. A great time well spent with my family down in Christchurch to celebrate my mum’s birthday.

Happy parkrun eve to everyone - a huge thank you to the volunteers this week who have stepped up to replace some of our regular volunteers. With winter sport being full upon us, it helps to have people who are ready to take part in the volunteer experience. Remember, Mandeville Village Bakehouse rewards our effort with a discount post-event; mention and show your barcode to the staff.

Event #9 Mandeville parkrun 26th May 2026

To me, one of the great joys as a keen parkrun tourist is that it takes me to places I wouldn’t otherwise visit. In the case of Mandeville, I don’t think I’d even heard of it. I certainly didn’t have it on my “must visit” list before parkrun started here a couple of months ago. But this morning, there I was, lining up with 63 others for the 8am start in calm and dry, conditions. To me, at c.8°C, it felt fairly chilly, but I gather it was warmer than the last 2 weeks. I guess that’s a perspective you have when you head this way from the Coromandel in May, not one felt by the locals!
Mandeville, or Mandeville North as it is also known, presumably to distinguish it from Mandeville in Southland, is named after William Montagu, the 7th Duke of Manchester, aka Viscount Mandeville. He never actually came to New Zealand, however, there was a plan for him to emigrate here and to this end he purchased 200 ha of land on the site of the village in the mid 1800’s. A quick search tells us of the 12 million plus people who have registered for parkrun, there’s an incredible 51 with the surname Mandeville, almost all UK based. Wouldn’t it be fun if one (or more) visited their eponymous event?
The Mandeville/Ohoka district is really a satellite of Christchurch that has been growing steadily since the 2011 earthquake, and at the last census had a population of just under 4,000. However, size doesn’t matter, so long as there’s a team of enthusiastic locals to get the event off the ground and provide the backbone of regular supporters. The team, ably led today by RD Bryant Hardy, were super friendly and welcoming, and clearly proud to bring parkrun to this corner of New Zealand. Well done and thankyou!
Mandeville Sports Club was designated as a site for sport and recreation as long ago as 1860, and since then has seen many and varied disciplines take place. It has hosted first class cricket and been used as a training venue by the All Blacks, Crusaders and Fijian Drua rugby teams. It has held the Canterbury Rodeo since 2008, equestrian and canine events are popular, as is archery. I assume the latter has to distance itself in both time and space from the others in order to avoid any unfortunate accidents! However, despite this rich and storied history, it wasn’t until the 21st March this year that it reached the pinnacle of its’ achievements with the inaugural parkrun.
This flat course traverses mixed terrain (gravel, grass and plentiful tree roots) as it completes a double out and back around ¾ of the complex. A clever one-way system has been implemented at potential pinch points which works really well. As always on courses like this, there’s plenty of chance to cheer on and encourage friends and others, especially if you’re someone who looks for your name toward the bottom of the results like myself. I had barely seemed to have set off when Mark Bailey was screaming towards me nearing the end of his first lap enroute to collecting the number 1 token in an impressive 17.21 on his very first parkrun anywhere. Tokens 2 and 5 were taken by Weston and August Bailey, both in Junior age groups and also both scanning their barcodes for the first time. I’m guessing sons of Mark, so a very speedy family. By the way boys, look at the age grade scores, you both beat Dad there! Thomas and Ross Turnbull also took their very first step in parkrun world today, so well done all 5 of you. This may be your first step toward one of those “milestone” T-shirts, and whilst no-one qualified for one today, there were a good collection on display. Several 100’s and 250’s were noted and one 500, Gail Sharp at her 517th event. Something most of us can only dream about, but nonetheless inspiring, well done.
There were 26 of us completing Mandeville parkrun for the first time today (including Gail, the Turnbulls and the Baileys), seemingly from all points of New Zealand, though I didn’t hear mention of anyone from further afield. These included first lady home, Krystal Stillwell, well done to you.
I couldn’t help but observe how todays event epitomised the very ethos of parkrun, everyone is welcome to participate in whatever way suits. Apart from the speedsters already mentioned, there were joggers and walkers, a large contingent of barkrunners, people with sight and hearing difficulties, and infants being pushed around in buggies, each and every one starting the weekend in the best possible way. Remember, the only way you will ever finish last at parkrun is by volunteering as tailwalker, and the only way you will ever lose at parkrun is by staying in bed!
We all observe different things at parkrun, and being a keen birdwatcher, I notice the birds that can be seen and/or heard as we go. In fact, my wife and I walked one lap of the course the day before, at an even slower pace than we managed this morning, for that specific purpose. I can therefore report that you can look and listen out for at least Paradise Shelduck, Pukeko, Harrier, Spur-winged Plover, Kingfisher, Grey Warbler, Magpie, Fantail, Silvereye, Starling, Blackbird, Dunnock, House Sparrow, Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Goldfinch and Yellowhammer here. Doubtless there will be others, but if you’re keen to chase down the Baileys, I recommend a separate visit to observe the birds!
The most important shout out, as always goes to the volunteers. There were 16 high-viz heroes today to whom we all owe a big thankyou. Without volunteers, parkrun doesn’t happen. Whether it’s marshalling, time-keeping, tailwalking or any any of the other roles, it’s an essential part of the event. Never tried it? Give it a go! Contact the team via email ([email protected]), social media, or in person on the day. It will add a whole new dimension to parkrunday and there really is something for everyone.
Lastly, and maybe as important as the parkrun itself, is the post-run breakfast and parkfaff. The selected venue for this event is the Mandeville Village Bakehouse which offers a selection of rolls and baked goods to accompany your chosen beverage and replace the calories so recently used. I don’t care if a Steak and Mushroom Pie is considered a strange choice for breakfast or not, I enjoyed it!

Thankyou Mandeville for a great morning.
