Ohai Views are grateful for the interest of the Parliamentary Commissioner of the Environment in our fight for a fair deal for Ohai. If not for someone in this role, who at central government will help small communities like ours?

Critics say proposal to fold department into a new ‘mega ministry’ will dilute accountability and put nature protections at risk

Greetings Ohai and Friends!

Here we are almost at the end of another year.

It has been a year full of correspondence, meetings, requests for information and research into what has gone on in the past and what we can achieve today, and much much more.

Thanks for your wonderful support and encouragement over the last year.

We have been working hard with council and government agencies to resolve the issues with the loss of our views and the failure to provide us with the recreation amenities like riverside walks and native bush areas that we were promised.

In relation to the pine forest, we are continuing our efforts to protect our views from being blocked by the plantation. We are expecting to hear back from council and government agencies in the new year in response to several of our initiatives. We have had some encouraging words so far which is exciting.

The Department of Conservation has confirmed that the 20-metre wide marginal strips along the Morley Stream through the former mine site exist and can be used by us for recreation purposes such as walking and fishing. We will be engaging with local tramping and fishing folk and with the Outdoor Access Commission to get signage erected defining where access is allowed and possible and to then develop walking tracks along the stream. Watch this space.

So we end this year feeling very optimistic about the future as we strive for you to Save Ohai's Views, and get some of the Community Amenities we were promised in 2012.

As mentioned at our public meeting in November we have engaged an environmental lawyer which has been useful. It has shown us that we are on the right track and that our concerns and ideas are valid and worth pursuing.

This legal work does not come without cost. Up until now the invoices have been paid by committee members and generous donations.

However we do have outstanding bills and need money to cover this and future work.

We have our Give A Little fundraiser ready to launch (its awaiting approval from their end), and we can provide you with our bank account details if you would like to start making donations directly to us to support the cause.

Thank you for your belief in us and your ongoing support. It isn’t easy at times but it is your support and encouragement that keeps us going. We couldn’t do it otherwise.

On behalf of the Ohai Views Incorporated committee (Gina, Alessandra, Kuki and myself) I hope you all have a restful and enjoyable Christmas and a very Happy New Year!

Kia ora Ohai whānau & friends, haere mai and a warm welcome to all our new followers. We’re grateful for your support and invite you join with our precious community as we fight for a fair deal for Ohai.

We are a small Western Southland town that was promised recreational facilities once coal mining on the land bordering our homes came to an end. Instead, we are now facing the development of a large pine forest. This is a change that will affect how we live and pose serious health and safety risks for generations to come.

There’s a misconception that our only concern is the loss of our iconic views of the culturally significant Takitimu Mountain range. While losing that vista is heartbreaking, our community’s worries run much deeper, we’re committed to making those concerns heard.
