MetService have updated the heavy rain watch and warning for Northland this evening, and it now covers a more widespread area, and the full 24 hour period from midnight Thursday until midnight Friday. The risk here is that the rainfall may become very slow moving, and heavy downpours or thunderstorms that become stationary can cause some large rainfall amounts accumulating in localised areas.

Heavy rain for northern parts of the North Island

A low and associated trough are expected to bring heavy rain, with the potential for localised downpours, to northern parts of the North Island until Friday night.

Please stay up to date with forecasts.

Heavy Rain Warning - Orange
Area: Eastern Northland south of Kawakawa

Period: 24hrs from midnight Thu, 23 Apr - midnight Fri, 24 Apr

Forecast: Expect 100 to 150 mm of rain. Intensities of 15 to 25 mm per hour expected, and there is a chance of downpours of 25 to 40 mm per hour, which may or may not be associated with thunderstorms. Low chance of upgrading to a Red Warning.

Impact: Streams and rivers may rise rapidly. Surface flooding, slips, and difficult driving conditions possible.

Action: Clear your drains and gutters to prepare for heavy rain. Avoid low-lying areas and drive cautiously.

Heavy Rain Watch
Area: Northland south of Kaitaia not included in Warning
Period: 21hrs from 3am - midnight Fri, 24 Apr
Forecast: Periods of heavy rain, and a low risk of localised downpours. Accumulations may approach warning criteria in some places. Moderate chance of upgrading to a Warning.
