To celebrate World Fish Migration Day, we hosted a particularly special speakers’ evening on Tuesday, where local experts shared kōrero about migratory fish species such as īnanga (whitebait), highlighted the impact of fish barriers in our rivers, and explored innovative ways to improve fish passage.
We were awed by our guests from the north, Hana Carrington and her son Ari (Patuharakeke). Hana has developed an ingenious technique using traditional knowledge of weaving harakeke to build fish ladders for climbing species like tuna, helping them scale dams — rawe! We will share more about their inspiring mahi next week. Tune in tomorrow to hear how we can support the health of our freshwater ika from the experts at Te Kāhui o Taranaki Iwi@Taranaki Catchment Communities - TCCTaranaki Regional Council Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust

We’re excited to share some great news for kiwi in Taranaki. We’re grateful to have received community funding from Wild for Taranaki to support Taranaki Kōhanga Kiwi at Rotokare

This funding supports the partnership between Rotokare Scenic Reserve Trust and Taranaki Kiwi Trust, helping us continue kiwi conservation work at Rotokare and keep the mahi moving.

The funding will go towards new transmitters, microchips, and scales. All vital tools for our kiwi monitoring and seasonal translocations. It’s been a massive translocation season for the partnership, and every dollar helps us get more kiwi safely established in other predator-free spaces

Wild for Taranaki and Wai Connection were happy to offer a hands‑on Freshwater Fish ID Training with Ngāti Te Whiti last week, led by the expertise of Freshwater Scientist Tyler Kleyzen from TRC. Together we explored freshwater species, learned fish identification skills, and had plenty of fun along the way. The day was all about sharing knowledge, building capability, and strengthening kaitiakitanga. A huge thank you to the Ngāti Te Whiti rōpū and Tyler for joining us — learning together, laughing together, and growing our collective skills for the health of our waterways.
We'll have a Fish ID workshop for Wild for Taranaki members coming up on 18 June, if you're interested, please get in touch! Taranaki Regional Council

This season’s tūturiwhatu/dotterel breeding success reflects the impact of protective measures and the collective efforts of many—let’s do it again next year and help these populations grow.

A collaboration of conservation volunteers, councils and caring dog owners has helped Taranaki’s vulnerable dotterels raise a record number of chicks.
