💯Thanks for the reminder guys!😊

You've got a trap in the backyard, but when was the last time you checked it, set it or rebaited it? No judgement here, we know life gets in the way sometimes.

The sun's out and we're having longer evenings, so now's a great time to get back into regular trapping if you've let it slip a bit over winter.

Plus spring is when breeding and nesting birds are most vulnerable. By minimising the risk of predation, you’re giving the young feathery families in your backyard the best chance at survival.

Let's do it Taranaki and get those numbers up again next month.

Please sign and share! While Denniston isn't in our region, it is of national and global importance. It's home to unique species that won't be recreated once destroyed. It's conservation land which means we should be able to trust our government to protect it - not allow it to be mined. Please add your voice to highlight the opposition to the proposed plans. 🌿✨ Working Bee this Saturday! ✨🌿

Come and give us a hand at our beautiful Te Wairoa Reserve this Saturday, starting from 10am. We’ll be:

🌱 Weeding and tidying
🚶‍♀️ Clearing and marking tracks

And of course, we’ll finish up with a sausage sizzle for lunch 🌭😋

👉 If you’d like to come along this Saturday, please RSVP on the event page: https://www.facebook.com/share/1ZMEB2GsRs/

If you can’t make it this time (or if you’re feeling extra-keen!), we’d love to see you back at Te Wairoa on Saturday 21st September for a planting day 🌳💚 Please RSVP to Stephanie - her contact details are on the poster below.

We’d love to see you there! 🙌🐦

🌿✨ A simply fabulous morning out at Tom & Don’s reserve yesterday! ✨🌿

Karen and Jess from TRC spent time mapping out the honeysuckle areas so that contractors can find and spray them. In addition to the two patches already located, another spot was discovered - and the vines are growing quickly! We’re very relieved that these will be given an initial spray soon 🌱, and then we’ll just need to keep an eye out for any stragglers that escape the main removal efforts.

While we were there, we were treated to the sight of 5-6 kererū feasting on the ripe porokaiwhiri / pigeonwood berries 🕊️🍇. Such a special moment to witness - we hope you enjoy this short video of them as much as we did! 🎥💚

Nurturing nature…

Great to see our awesome conservation (Level 4) and environmental management (Level 5) students caring for the precious whenua by helping & Bird – Taranaki to restore our natural environment at Te Wairoa Reserve.

Forest & Bird said: “a fantastic crew from the Level 4 WITT Ecology class came to lend a hand - and what a difference they made! These students tackled the tough terrain with energy and determination, clearing a large area and making it ready for the next stage of restoration.

We’re now planning to replant the area with low-growing ngahere natives like kawakawa, which will help stabilise the slope and support local biodiversity.”

Contributing and connecting to our community – that’s we’re all about at WITT

When Powerco removed trees under the powerlines at our Te Wairoa Reserve, it left a tricky problem - a steep slope now overrun with weeds and covered in fallen branches. Not the easiest spot to work on! 😅
