These beautiful souls at Manaaki Farm Sanctuary quietly do something truly extraordinary.

They care for so many fellow beings, giving them safety, love, kindness and a chance to simply be. They almost never ask for help or seek recognition - they just quietly get on with the work of saving and caring for as many lives as they can.

We care very deeply for both of them and have an enormous amount of respect for their knowledge, compassion, dedication and the incredible work they do every single day.

They have recently started this page, so please give Manaaki Farm Sanctuary a follow and show them some love. If you’re able to offer any support, in whatever form, it would be so very gratefully appreciated.

Sometimes the people doing the most important work are the ones making the least noise. These two are definitely those people.

Our little twin made it through the night, and we’re so relieved to see him still fighting this morning. 🥹❤️

He’s still wheezy and poorly with pneumonia, but his suck reflex is getting stronger, which is a really encouraging sign.

I stayed up with him overnight, keeping him warm, comfortable and closely monitored. He’s continuing with his treatment and will need further veterinary care as we monitor his breathing and progress closely.

We’re taking things hour by hour. He’s definitely not out of the woods yet, but he’s fighting. 🐑❤️

We currently have six lambs in our care, and a single bag of milk powder costs around $160. With six hungry babies to feed, along with veterinary care and medication, the costs add up quickly.

If you’d like to help us care for these little ones, our Givealittle fundraiser is here:

Thank you so much for all the messages, love and support. ❤️

Dear friends, supporters and followers, if you have been tagged in on an old post from us I'm sure you realise that it's not us. That we aren't selling t-shirts or mugs and that it is some nefarious and unscrupulous person trying to part you from your money. I have deleted their comment and the tags. Sorry!
Cute pic of Shanti!

Big Al was a rooster rescued from a broiler shed. He came to us through a friend as he had begun to crow so was not allowed in the city anymore. He was coming up 3 years old now. He'd had a good life with friends, sunshine, dustbaths, good food and care. Luckier than millions of others every year. Sadly it was time to make the hard call for him.
He'd been inside in the hospital cage for 3 weeks after we found him laying under the ferns outside and being unable to walk. He was at risk of being picked on by the others. Nature can be merciless on the sick or injured.

He had bumble foot which we got cleared up over a couple of weeks and he was standing and eating fairly happily. He weighed 8.5kg so was put on a mostly fruit and veg diet to drop his weight. Then in the last week he simply couldn't stand up anymore.
Sadly he stopped eating voluntarily and had to be hand fed. The tips of his comb started to go purple, a sign of his not getting enough oxygen. Yesterday as we were feeding him he had a fit of some sort and went all limp. He rallied but was in obvious distress. We took him to the vet, knowing the likely outcome. The Vet said his heart was no longer able to support his huge body and was in serious trouble.

That's just the reality of rescuing animals, but doesn't make the decision any easier.i'll miss his clumsy gentle friendly ways, his comical looking run and his big deep crow.The.part that really both saddens and angers me is that Big Al was bred specifically to grow incredibly fast, designed for a lifespan of just 42 days from egg to death.. Six weeks then a violent end.

This being with his quirks and preferences, his obvious enjoyment of lying in the sun and digging a dustbath, would normally become nothing more than an unthinking dinner or snack for someone. He was so much more than just Roast Chicken, Chicken breasts, KFC or a chicken sandwich. . .

How callous, shutdown or willfully blind have we become as a species when we let the victims of our money driven world become invisible to the vast majority of us. Not worth even a momentary thought as an individual that ended up in pieces on our plate.

Be free Big Al. Goodbye my friend, You were lucky and you were loved.
