Vigil for Ukraine

Ukraine marks its Independence Day on August 24, celebrating the 35th anniversary of the restoration of its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. The local radio station The MOST FM devoted one hour of its airtime to Ukrainian live music.

This week on The Most FM’s Live Gig Hour we are taking you on a very special musical journey through Ukraine, from Folk Traditions to Rock, Punk and the Sound of Resistance.
For this one-off episode, we’ll travel from traditional Hutsul music and Ukrainian folk songs to rock, punk, contemporary pop and the extraordinary theatrical sound of Dakh Daughters.
There will be music recorded in Kyiv, Poland and Normandy, a Ukrainian voice meeting Pink Floyd, rock performed with a symphony orchestra, traditional music reimagined through punk, and contemporary Ukrainian artists showing that Ukrainian culture continues to create, evolve and bloom.

I have repaired an old ethnic doll. It was a cheap mainstream production of Soviet era. It was dirty, dusty, broken and smelled like an item from an abandoned cabinet from a very old house.

I stripped off her dirty clothing (including old questionable stockings), washed her body and hair, repaired broken limbs and made a new costume. I have never bought any of the materials. All patches of materials were from a drawer downstairs. The colourful decorative ribbons were the leftovers of my WOMAD dress. The vinok (head dress) is made from flowers from another project.
