Blind Harry update ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿฎ

Nearly one month on from having his last eye removed and Harry is doing so well. All stitches out and scar is healing fast. He has also got most of his confidence back and is navigating the farm so well.

Harry was born blind but we never knew to what extent. Could he see shadows, could he see night time and day time, was it blurry or could he see nothing but black? So seeing how relaxed he was immediately after surgery and how he has adjusted to it now being black, make us think he couldnโ€™t see much to begin with, so life for Harry hasnโ€™t really changed.

He has always been the special kid since we got him at one week old ๐Ÿ˜

In 2022 he had the first eye removed due to cancer and we managed to save the other one back then. But we knew it was a matter of time before it came back and he would need the other eye removed.

The surgery one month ago wasnโ€™t without drama ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿฝโ€โ™€๏ธ First he got his head stuck in the head bale after deciding to lay down under anaesthetic. We managed to free his gigantic head from this and then realised that his massive 1.5Tonne body was wedged in the yard and a tractor couldnโ€™t even pull him out. The only way to free him was to cut the steel yard away from him using a grinder. But there was race against time to find a battery powered grinder and cut him free before he woke up from anaesthetic.

This ordeal was f*cking terrifying ๐Ÿซฃ but a massive thank you to my neighbour Pete for coming to the rescue with his tractor and our other neighbours, CORTEVA for loaning us their battery powered grinder. Harry was oblivious to all the drama and eventually woke up and went straight back to what he does best, eating!

Our little sanctuary have some pretty big vet bills, thanks to his surgery, which was $1000 alone. Our yard is also in pieces so we need to fix this asap, so we have a safe space for vet emergencies. Any hep financially or in labour would be so appreciated ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ–ค

Blind Harry is currently undergoing surgery to remove his last eye ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ

Send your love and hugs his way โ™ฅ๏ธ

We will update as soon as we can with how he is doing. He is such a special boy and we would do anything to keep him living his best life. This is a huge surgery for him and we donโ€™t know the extent of how blind he is, so there might be an adjustment period after surgery.

We will@keep you all posted as we can ๐Ÿ–ค

Our vet bills are over $2k, which is adding to the stress of it all, if you can help in anyway towards his surgery, we would be so greatly appreciative ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿฝ

Harryโ€™s Surgery Update ๐Ÿฎ

We have had the costs back to remove Harryโ€™s eyes due to cancer coming back in it.

We need to raise $1000 for him to be able to have this life saving surgery. He is due to have the surgery at the end of February/ early March, with our amazing vets from .

If you would like to sponsor his surgery, donate towards his surgery or help in anyway, please reach out or use the bank details below.

We donโ€™t ask for financial help much as we try to be as self sustainable as possible but vet bills this high, cripple a charity like ours so we need your help.

Harry is such a special boy and a massive part of our sanctuary family. He come to us when he was 5 days old as a bobby calf destined for slaughter and was fully blind from birth. It has been such a special and heart warming journey watching him grow up to be this huge, gentle, confident boy and he has so much h more life left in him ๐Ÿค๐Ÿฎ
He had surgery in 2022 to remove his other eye due to cancer and handled it like a champ and recovered so well. We know he can do this again!

Please SHARE far and wide so we can get Harry the help he desperately needs โ™ฅ๏ธ

Harryโ€™s cancer is back ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿฅบ

We had a vet visit today and got some bad news about Harry ๐Ÿฎ and one of our horses.
Deli ๐Ÿด is needing a specialist vet on an eye issue so we will have more to share soon when we know more ๐Ÿฅบ

In December 2022, Harry got cancer in both his eyes. He had surgery to remove one eye and they managed to save the other but warned that it might come back. Well it has come back and the vets have said he will need his other eye removed sooner rather than later.

Harry was born fully blind so removing his last eye will not impact his way of life. But it is a major surgery for him and for our little sanctuary, it is a costly one.

We will plan a fundraising quiz night for this once we have an idea on cost and have locked in a date. But there is an urgency to this so surgery will most likely be end of February.

We need all the financial help we can get for this so if you want to donate towards Harryโ€™s surgery you can via our charitable trust bank account:

We will keep everyone updated. Send Harry your positive vibes ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿฎ ###x

Calling all Volunteers ๐Ÿค ๐Ÿช ๐ŸŒฑ

We are in desperate need of a few extra hands around the sanctuary. We have some big plans this year but to get us there, we need some extra help with maintenance (initially) and then ongoing maintenance & help with animals.

Anneka is due to have her second child in June this year, as well as chasing around a toddler and Kate has two teenagers and a full time job, so things are hectic.
Some extra hands during the week and especially May - August this year, would be amazing! ๐Ÿ˜

Volunteer duties:
* lots of w**d eating
* spraying fence lines and car park
* fixing troughs (when needed)
* building a goat playground (materials supplied obviously)
* cleaning out piggies shed and putting new hay down
* building chicken coup
* moving animals to new paddocks
* assisting with vet visits and open days (if needed)
* we also have native tree planting and some gardening to get our car park back to looking welcoming.

We are after 2-4 people that might like to do a few hours per week, on a regular basis.

There will be an induction for everyone and everything will be provided. Sanctuary is located in Omata, Taranaki NZ.

All volunteers will be able to spend time with the animals and also be able to bring immediate family to visit the sanctuary whenever they like (by prior arrangement).

We are super keen to build a beautiful community out here with people who love to work with and for the animals. If you think this might be something you are keen to do or you know a friend that might be keen to help, please TAG them.

Happy 2026 everyone! ๐Ÿฅณ

Sutton Road Animal Sanctuary has been super quiet the last year or so but we have big plans for our little sanctuary so stay posted to our Instagram & Facebook.

Kate & I thought we would do a little video of the farm kids so everyone can see the animals again. We will be doing introductions to ALL animals over the next few weeks! If you know an animal lover, TAG THEM! ๐Ÿฎ

We will putting a post up shortly seeking volunteers, so if you know someone interested tag them in this reel ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿฝโ™ฅ๏ธ

Looking forward to sharing our crazy farm family again xx
